Cant get gears-help
After a long period of non use I am trying to get my 1800Gti to run. I seem to have made progress on the engine however i tried to move it today and could not engage any gears when engine running. It has been suggested that the clutch may be seized? Any suggestions? Thanks.

There is the old school alternative method that doesn't involve disassembling half the engine bay.
Extreme care must be taken and I wouldn't advise unless you have PLENTY of space are 100% CONFIDENT you can do it. It may also break something in the drive traing.
The trick is to start engine neutral and run until it's up to working temperature.
Making sure you have lots of space in front of car, turn off engine. Engage 2nd(?) gear and then attempt to start engine with your foot on the clutch pedal. Because the engine is warm and just run it should start instantly and lurch forward and free off the seized clutch with a bang. Be prepare to turn off engine incase it sets off going forward.

can you engage gears with engine off? does it feel like it'll go into gear but you may break something? sounds like the nobbin has broken in the plate thingy. the plate that has a carbon center piece that is held with the lock ring. can't think what it's called.

Yes I can engage gears with the engine off. When I try to select reverse it just makes that grinding noise as it trys to select the gear. It was suggested engaging a gear and rocking the car back and forth, would this free anything?

if clutch is stuck on, pour a bottle of coke into the clutch housing that can free it off sometimes
