hmm
sounds like gear selector try pushing gear stick down slightly then pusing into first or even where reverse is
if not ive known gti boxes to loose first gear could mean new gearbox

put ur foot on the clutsh push ur gear lever laft then forward
lol
is it that it goes in but no drive or is it that there seams to be a barrier stoping u pushing it in if theres a barier will it go in others or just not into 1st?
could be a number off thigs but des sound like the linkage or worse

Thanks for the replies. It seems to be a barrier stopping the gear stick going into first. Sometimes it goes in when steering wheel is turned and when you take it into reverse first. Very strange! All other gears are ok so do you think it could be the whole gear box?

I agree with bens_cab, it sounds like a misaligned linkage which means that you need to push the lever down, as you would do for reverse, to slip it into 1st. Should be not-too-hard to sort out, if its this. I'd be tempted to have a good play around with it before you condemn the gearbox. Its always an outside possibility that 1st's somehow jammed or not selectable, in the gearbox. Does it work normally in all the other gears?

I'd fit a linkage repair kit and adjust the linkage correctly first before doing anything with the box itself.
When I bought my sportline the bushes in the linkage were so bad I couldn't get 1st and rarely achieve 2nd. I had to drive it over 70 miles like it to get it home!
