Bell Housing gearbox oil seal replacement.

Hey people,

at the later stages of a complete engine replacement in my golf cab 1.8 carb, its been a hell of a ride, just got my fingers crossed that the engine is all good and i can get the nasty little c clamps back on - such a pain!  :wink:

I've picked up, a few new bits whilst ive got the engine out. new clutch, timing/alternator belts.

 when i got the gearbox off, i noticed alot of oil in the bell housing, which i know isn't right!!!

that would explain the slippy clutch problems i had, becuase the clutch looked all good when i got it out, replaced it anyway but from what i can tell the outer seal from the gearbox around the spindle is letting a small amount of oil in. just wondered if anyone had any experience with changing this seal, and how to get the old one out, ive picked up a new one so this is the last bit before the gearbox gets puts on the engine, dropped in and hope to be running by tomorrow evening!!

they are pritty easy to replace and worth doing is if the engine is out

then just knock the old one out and new one in

found a u-clamp (exhaust) for the c clamp replacement, not looking forward to it any advice?!?! those things scare my face!!!

Mine started leaking too and caused the clutch to die. Can't remember exactly, but I had a few probs with changing that seal. For one, the thing was tricky to get out. Think I resorted to a tool a bit like a dentist's hook/scraper thing. Then I found the seal I got in the kit was the wrong size (too deep) so I ended up buying a range of seals from Hereward truck and bus in Peterborough and eventually found one that fit. Been fine since.

thats the input shaft seal, thread in some self-tapping screws into it and pull, or some other way to kill it and remove. i recomend you also replace the pushrod seal and the brass bush behind it:
