To run within the stock arches with no work, I'd stick with what you've got mate. Bung a set of 165/50/15's on 'em and see how you like it.  The stock return lips on the clippers are quite wide on the rear and may scrub if the car is lowered.

I have a set of 7" wide zenders (34 offset I think) running on spacers due to front suspension issues and they have been a nightmare to get under the arches at the back. the rear metal/plastic arches have had to be heavily modified to give some chance of clearing the tyres.

Not an area I'd recomend messing with unless your prepared to rip the car apart and spend some time getting it right. I'm still not sure if mine will run right. I will just have to see what happens when it's back on the road.

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.

Is it realy that bad with 7" wide wheels?  I was hoping to fit 8"s on my clipper, 8.5" at the back with super stretch tyres?

Prob not too bad with out the spacers, however with them all my return lips are ground off now, arches cut back and 1 degree negative camber on the back to get clearance.

I'm running 185/45/15 tyres, if i'd gone for stretch then who knows on the fit

I think you could get 8.5's on, just don't think they'll bolt up and run. There's alot of work to do mate!

A word of warning too, make sure your not scrubbing tyres when fitted, any signs of scuffing and the MOT tester may well fail the car.

I'll drop some pics of mine and get them posted!

the issue with wheels is as much offset as width. I'm not sure of the correct offset for a golf, think it's about 35mm.
