Bad knocking noise!!

Hi peaple
I have a real bad knocking noise coming from either my left or right front wheel. I have taken it to a garage and they had it up in the air while running and did a thew other bits and pieces but they couldn't find the problem. As I had hit a real big pothole which bent my n/s wheel real bad a while ago I thought it had to be the nearside somewhere, so I replaced the n/s wheel bearing and the driveshaft but this still didn't solve the problem. It knocks all time and more if I turn right which made me think it was the nearside in the first place, but know I have changed these parts I am stuck. Could it be the offside bearing or driveshaft? It not long passed it's mot with flying colours.
please anybody with any ideas please comment as this is driving me mad and its been on going for months even years now!!

Still not got to the bottom of this one then.

Have a read of THIS post, it has a few suggestions to look at poss suspension probs.  When you changed the drive shaft did you use a new cv joint?  Other possibles could be, loose wheel nuts/hub nut, trackrod ends or ball joints.  Can you feel anything through the steering wheel atall?  From what I can remember it does sound like a drivetrain related noise rather than suspension.

When we next meet up and I can give you the rest of your car back, I've a book you can have that maybe able to help you out a bit.

Hiya ew
  Thanks for the reply
Yep still got that annoying knocking noise, I had tried a new cv joint at first but didn't change a thing. There is a slight vibration through the floor but thats it. I did think the noise was coming from the n/s at first but now i'm not so sure. Will be good to meet up again, like to see what you have done to your car since I last saw you.
  Thanks again

Check your exhaust.
I had a seat ibiza cupra that did exactly the same

Knocking noise

Same thing happened to my sportline. One question to ask is does the knocking get quicker the more you accelerate?? If so I may have the answer.
My knocking noise was difficult to pinpoint and if I had to swear I would have said it was coming from the front, but in actual fact it was the rear!
The brake cable had come adrift from it's holding clip and was fouling on the inside of the wheel causing a very loud knocking noise.
I can't believe your mechanics would miss this fault but mine did!

Hope this helps and good luck.

hi mate, check where the drive shaft flange is bolted 2 the gearbox, make sure all the bolts are tight as this can cause a knocking noise if one isnt tight

Well here's a coincidence, yesterday I hit a big pothole in my sportline, and guess what…knocking noises :banghead:   It's left the car pretty much undriveable.  I'll let you know what it turns out to be.  Could have done the same damage doing it in a similar way.

It sounds to simple to be true ,but I found an annoying rattle from the front wheel area was a rusty and broken mud flap fitting, which was obviously worse when turning corners.
Your noise sounds like a CV joint ,but you say you changed that .Could it be the other side and the noise is travelling  ?.

Knocking noise

Hi ya peeps
Thanks for all your help much appreciated, I have looked at the exhaust all seems secure and the brake cable is tight and not hanging which leads me to the o/s drive shaft. I checked to see if it was tight and all was ok so all there is to do is to replace it? Not sure whether to buy a second hand drive shaft or to replace the cv joints on the original one? I can get a second hand drive shaft for ?45, does that sound about right?
 Thanks again for your help

PS. EW real sorry to hear about you hitting a pot hole as well, hopefully we will sort this out once and for all. :banghead:

I would replace the cv joints if the shaft itself is ok. At least you will know the cvs are good then… (and you shouldn't have to replace them for a good long while). Have a look on ebay. You could get inner & outer new for around ?50.
