5th Gear Switch - 7G gearbox
I used to have a working econometer and change up-light, but it all stopped working after I put in a replacement box last year. The car is an 83 5sp and I replaced a 7G code box with another 7G code box. 7G11033->7G14033, so according to the info here: VW 020 5-Speed Transaxle Ratio Chart I managed to find a box just 3 days newer than the cars original one!
I got a new switch from CrazyQuiffs and did the rewiring mentioned elsewhere. This got the reverse lights working again; but no 5th gear functionality. When I short the 5th gear wires at the gearbox, the econometer needle moves into view as it should for 5th gear. I So I removed the switch and put my fingers in the hole to try figure out what's happening in there… I can feel the lobe that activates the reverse contact, but I can't feel any lobe moving as the box is put into 5th.
Could someone with access to a 7G box tell me if they get the same result? I'm wondering if the 5th gear lobe in my 'box has perished or become detached or something.
Sadly I scrapped the old box as it had knackered 1st and 2nd synchros, so I can't compare to that.
