2nd hand gearboxes
I'm looking for advice on second hand gearboxes - I've just fitted one and it was a disaster, as soon as I filled it with oil, it started dripping out fast. The original one jumped out of fifth and one of the drive hubs had a lot of play in it.
So the question is, what tests can you do on a second-hander to know if its good or if you shouldn't touch it with a bargepole?
Also another reason for changing the original was a squeaking whine that was coming from the front drivers' side, at speeds over 30mph. Not the engine, as it was independent of engine speed. I changed the wheel bearing and brake discs/pads, and that didn't do it. Then I found play in the hub, and assumed it was the diff bearing. When I tried the car this evening the noise was still there, plus others from the changed box. Its a 1.8 cabrio.
Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

The whine could be the differential - could also be the CV bearing - although the later tends to clunk more than whine.
My CV's used to "shimmer" - as though the brake pads were vibrating against the disc - like you used to get in the old A series 911's - ie the CV's can generae all sorts of noises
I'd pick up with Crazyquiff first - he'll put you right on the gearbox. He's very responsive to enquiries.
Best of luck yeah?
