2nd gear catching
Hi,
I've a 88 mk1 convertible gti .goes into all the gears except it crunches from 1 St to 2nd , can't remember if it's like that from 3 rd down to 2 nd but fine on all others.
Would it be the gear linkage ?

Could be second Gear synco wear or linkage.
Common problem on GTI 2nd gear crunch.

Re: 2nd gear catching
It's an all too common problem - you could try draining out the oil & refilling with automatic transmission fluid - it it cures the problem happy days - if not you wasted maybe £20.
It can be fixed quite cheaply (depending on who you use for the repair) - I can quoted you on it if you wish.
Regards Neil.

Hi,and thanks for replying
I've ordered a linkage kit with bushes for 5 on eBay ,I'll try that in conjunction with the auto trans fluid .
What's involved if it's the 2 gear synchro wear ?how much does it cost to sort that out ?

from my research best gear oil for 020 is redline MTL, it can sometimes help with a slightly worn syncro. if its too far gone theres nothing you can do but replace/rebuild

How much are the parts to do the synchro ?
How many hours or would I just be better off getting another gear box ?

Cheers Johnny,
is it an easy Job?
I called into a gearbox place today as I was passing.
£200 labour to remove gear box.
Syncro £72.00
Brass ring £60.00
If is the gear it's self £124.00
Plus any sundries etc.
you ain't gonna get much change under £500.00.

From experience down my parents garage if the box needs rebuilding then it's far better getting a recon one. They are quite complicated that we could not justify the time a mechanic would take in stripping it down and rebuilding.

I chatted to a fella the other day, he's got three or four GTI type gearboxes going quite cheap if you want let me know I'll pm you about it!
You could either swap for one of them, or use parts an rebuild yours?
About the best I can help out, sorry.
Kind regards,
Didge

not too bad but you need some tools! that is if you decide to do it 100% properly reshimming and the like. you could just replace the 2nd syncro though if the box is otherwise ok
