Need Specification From Mk1 Golf/Rabbit Steering Gear Rack

Post

 Hello,

I've come to this forum seeking help with an early Porsche 944 steering gear which has damage to the rack in it's manual rack and pinion assembly. I know these assemblies, along with numerous other pieces on the car, were borrowed from the VW Mk 1 cars. Towards that end I am hoping I can possibly purchase an aftermarket rack and pinion from Meyle, which are very inexpensive, and use the parts out of it to restore my Porsche rack. I have never seen repair components offered for the Porsche rack. The 'rack' part of my Porsche assembly is 527mm in length. The diameter I am sure is the same as early Jetta tie rods thread right on to it, and that is what is used by plenty with this rack and pinion in the 944s. I have attached a few pictures to illustrate what I have with the hopes that some of you may have an early Mk1 rack torn down to compare to mine. I am in the U.S., and we surely do drive on the wrong side of the road here, but I'm convinced the OEM just used the same shaft inserted with the cogs on the opposite side.

Thank you for your help/comments!

Richard

Quaife do a rack and pinion kit - one less turn lock to lock and it fits straight into a genuine VW casing - superb upgrade.

Cheers,
