B7 Passat MOT - tyre issue!

My family Dub gone in for MOT today - had a call off the garage - rear tyre NS got a cut in it & showing the wire  (Conti) & inner wear on OS rear!! Gutted - gone for Uniroyal Rainsport 3 XL's - same as my fronts. Thought it would fly through as the tread's looked fine on the rears. Better to be safe than sorry  even though £160 on a set of rubber  

Our B6 Passat goes through rears quicker than fronts and the wear is even across the width so not down to alignment issues. The early B6 had a link arm on the suspension which had a tendency to bend which VW upgraded but it was never a recall. Changed both of mine for the later ones but it still gets through tyres.
