Full restoration...
Introducing myself to the forum only today after 10 years of ownership with the MK1. I want to document as much as I can on this thread and hopefully get some good advice along the way.
Heres the car prior to breakdown.

Your in good hands so - looks like that didn't take to long. What's your plans again for the GTI? I guess you won't be completed before our September meet in Naas for our Wicklow tour 2017. Welcome to pop out and get some inspiration though. Should have in excess of 20 mk1's again.

In the meantime I'm rebuilding a few parts.
Got a sandblasting cabinet and 25kg of glass bead media. Should be fine enough not to damage aluminium parts but coarse enough to get through rust on steel. Seems to be working well so far…
I've also invested in a zinc plating kit to restore some of the parts original chromate finish. Currently using blue and yellow chromate, need to get a black chromate for some of the engine parts.

Would love to have it ready for then, but its unrealistic! Maybe the following year it'll be ready enough to drive.
Plan is to restore as close to OEM as possible while still upgrading a few items such as suspension, wheels, exhaust etc.

1981 GTI Irish Rebuild
New rings, bearings, honing, valves etc
Car has been delivered to the sand blasters. I'm waiting for the blaster to remove axles and place the shell on a rotisserie. I'll work on them as soon axles/brakes when he's done that
For now it's a matter of cleaning, plating and curing the parts I've off the car
