Trying to find which specific model (if any) my Cabby is

Post

Hi all,

Just out of curiosity I've been trying to find out what specific model my car is. I'm pretty sure it's a base (GL?) model, but not entirely sure as I don't have any of the original documentation or manuals. Also as it is an Australian delivered car info about models I can find on UK, US, and Euro sites seems to conflict with what I have.

Here's the stats:

 - Made in 1993
 - Alpine white, black/blue cloth interior. Unsure of original hood as it had been replaced when I got it, but I believe original interior lining was white.
 - 1.8lt injected (GTI?) engine, 5 speed manual
 - No optional extras (no power windows, power steering, AC). Only has a power hood.
 - Has GTI style console gauges, but I'm pretty sure the last owner added those as they're not properly wired in.
 - Has the 4 head light GTI-style grill.
 - Has the Clipper Kit.
 - Has Le Castellet wheels
 - Has standard-looking Mk2 style steering wheel
 - Original audio unit gone, but has both speakers and tweeters in the doors.
 - Last owner probably stuck the "GTI" badge on it, but came with original "Cabriolet" badge.

Many thanks in advance!

Sounds like it's had bits added to it over the years.

The only true way of finding out is to apply for the manufacture certificate from VW themselves. It's not cheap but here's the link…

Certificate and Data Sheets

I'm note sure its had bits added over the years (apart from the GTI badging and centre console) as almost all other Mk1 Cabbys I've seen in Australia are similar spec to mine.

I think we only got Cabbys here in the final years of the production run (1990-93), so I suspect you're right in that its probably just bits of whatever was left over in the Karmann factory.

Cheers for the link! Haha definetly more than I think I'll spend on this!

Do you still have the sticker on the rear cross member in the boot? That'll have a lot of data in it. The service book may also have the same sticker in it too (mine does).

The codes are here.

We don't have any Australian brochures in the galleries to refer to unfortunately. ☹️

Dano, agreeing with your response above , I ordered the full Monty of VW data and certificates last week, quite expensive at 129 Euros.

As I was approaching another birthday, I persuaded my family to contribute to my birthday present.

Despite VW saying it will take 5 weeks to deliver, Its arriving using via DHL and Royal Mail from 10am today.  That's just over a week.

I am appalled at the original VW Supplier of my car in that there is no Data Sheet in my Service Book or in the boot of my car.

Even the recording of of the chassis number is incomplete leaving the first few letters off (WVW ZZZ etc ) but one letter closer to the middle is missing. So I have recorded the whole lot over the top. What's also annoying is that the incorrect last numbers are recorded on the V5 from the outset.

I contacted Shuggy who was very helpful, he gave me a contact in Germany, despite filling in their request form for a new data sheet, I have heard nothing. I will try again in the near future.

P.S. I like the code list, I will compare with my data sheets when they arrive. Regards
