Sunroof adventures!

Post

Thought I had better check out the sunroof on my recent GTi purchase.  Very glad I did!!!!  Having removed the sunroof I used a torch to check out the rear drain tubes - not a pretty sight greeted me!!!  There was evidently rot around both rear tubes.  I tried to push a wire though the front drain holes but they were clearly bunged solid.  SO, I dropped the rear headlining (gulp!) and sure enough the rot was quite bad around both rear drain tubes. The spigot where the tubes attach were thankfully intact so it was a case of killing the rust, remaking the tube take off surround with alloy/filler.  Hardest part was working on the down the narrow gap between the roof and the sunroof pan where the sunroof retracts.  I used a remote drive on an electric drill to get various wire wheels down to the rear corners to clear the loose rust followed by garden canes/strip wood attached to paintbrushes to treat the rust, then smooth down any filler that had come through from underneath.  Took great care not to block the drain exits!  Finally undercoated/Hammerite top coat before reattaching the drain tubes (used a cable tie to ensure they do not some off). I still cannot work out where the rear drain tubes are meant to exit the car.  I know this has been discussed on the forum before - I cannot believe VW just let the pipes hang down in the rear corners to rot out the corner!  However the pipes do not appear long enough to have ever reached to outside.  I will need to to extend the pipes and make an access hole into the rear wheel arch or under the car somewhere. Another quick point for anyone "fiddling" with the front drain tubes - do watch out because if the bottom end of the tube "slips back" through the exit hole in the door jam - they are a b****r to get back!!!!  In the end I found it was easiest to pull the tubes out at the top, then feed a wire/curtain spring from the bottom hole to the top - slip the drain tube over the wire/curtain spring and feed the tube down the length of the A pillar and out the hole.  I will remember that for next time!!! Decent work.

The tube shrink a lot I've the years thats why they look wrong.

You would be best replacing the length of pipe with some silicone tube
