Hi all,
After some time searching, I found myself a Sportline Cabriolet 😃
It's a genuine 69000 mile car with a pile of receipts, stamped service book and every MOT going back to 1995 to back up the mileage. When I first saw it, it was covered in cobwebs, needed a wash and the red paintwork had faded to pink!
A few hours of machine polishing with Menzerna FG400 and a Sonus yellow pad has resulted in this… (Hopefully the photos work?)

To say I'm happy would be an understatement!!!
Lots of questions to come over the next few months. First job on the list is to get some rust around the offside wiper spindle and off side rear wing professionally sorted. After that I'm tempted to take on a cambelt change myself with a full service. I'll put the mohair roof on hold for when I can afford it!!
Cheers all

Welcome Frazer and thanks for joining us
That looks very tidy indeed. Is this the SL that was for sale in Rutland recently? (Market Harborough or thereabouts?)
Enjoy it mate, they're cracking cars.

Hi, that's the one, Market Harborough.
It looked really tired and in poor condition in the photos/description, but something told me to look at it.
As soon as the mileage checked out together with the new battery, 4 Pirelli tyres, exhaust, stainless fuel filler and new alternator… I couldn't resist!!
I reckon I ought to do the cambelt (its 3 years and 1000 miles old) and I want a new clutch as he bite point his high and vague and it's really stuff. A repair to the seat and in time a new roof. A small bit of rust and paint to do as a priority and I reckon I've got a great car
Can't stop finding reasons to go to the garage

Yeah it looked sorted. I was trying to get a viewing on it but they wouldn't get back in contact, maybe you had bought it already?! lol
A little work then and it will be minty fresh!

Whey Fraser, you found one!
You however do change your mind quite a lot, but glad you ended up with something you wanted! haha
A for the clutch the cable may just need adjusting before replacing the whole thing, make sure it's running the right way too cause that can make a difference the way it feels.
It should come through the bulk head, around the air inlet (mine actually goes through a gap where an air pipe runs into the back of the air inlet near the fifth injector, I know this cause I had to remove it to take the air inlet off), clip on the top of the rocker cover, towards the air filter box and then goes directly down onto the bracket on the top of the gear box - worth a try before spending lots of cash!
Look forward to seeing it / meeting you in person one day

Thanks Si, that is good advice. There isn't any slip or judder but there has been some previous bulkhead work done by the looks of things so I will check that out.
And yes, I have been know to change my mind… especially where a bargain is concerned!!!

Believe it or not mate a bulk head repair is a good sign, the golf was original built to be left hand drive and as a result they didn't properly reinforce that side of it for a clutch, so it's not uncommon for it to pull through.
There's a kit which you can get which is a plate, which you will see on a lot of golfs, however some people do a nicer job (I have the plate haha)
Well it looks like my alternator belt snapping may have been the best thing that happened to you haha!

Hi Frazer great to see another Sportline in a safe pair of hands.
It looks like the wait was worth it with a sweet looking paint finish and only 69k on the clocks and paperwork to back it up it sounds a cracker.
What's the hood like? Any pics of the engine bay and interior? Best of luck with it and as they say 'keep it between the ditches'!

Thanks Hugh,
It was definite worth the wait!! The hood I think is the original one. I can't be certain but there's no receipt for a replacement in the bundle I've got. It has some cracking in it, but I drove the car home over 140 miles of torrential rain last Monday and it didn't leak a drop!
I'll get some more pics up ASAP.
Cheers for your advice during my search
