all smiles!
Im new to the forum and new to mk1 golf ownership!
First a little about me (feel free to skip) I have been stupidly into car since i was tiny, watching topgear on a sunday instead of going to bed for school! naughty naughty! but seriously cars are my life, pretty much all i think and talk about (apart from sex or drink now and again as a good 17 year old should). have always been around car builds and the like and always have been fascinated with the shape and styling of the old Vw's/ Audis and basically any VAG! especially the very low...

I wanted a mk1 golf as a first car however couldnt really afford one at the time so found a beautiful mk2 polo saloon which ive spent plenty of time and money on and here how its looks today:

then as this car was getting silly and was horrid to drive daily (due to being so low) i purchased a passat b6 to drive daily:

now! the original plan was to build the polo into a crazy show car, air ride spray job and a g40 engine swap! i found a bargain g40 with a very strong engine and g40 charged! perfect!

Now with having the passat i can go crazy on a full on build instead of doing bits and pieces which had to be finished in time for work! Fair to say the g40 isnt slow and i had so much fun driving it back, but the plan stopped to put it in the polo as i wouldnt be able to use the engine to its full ability in the loon so plans changed and i found this thread on speed hunters, a berg cup inspired mk1 golf:
http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/07/period-perfected-berg-cupping-in-a-golf/

AUTOMOTIVE PORN!
so the search stared for a mk1 golf and soon found a good rolling shell and collected it the following weekend!
There are plenty of arguments with g40'ing the golf as people seem to think it will be slow, however the polo shell weighed alot more than a standard mk1 golf never-mind a stripped one and with some shiney bits which are coming soon, such as a decent cam, inlet manifold, throttle body, new manifold lightened bottom end and my gripper plate diff i have on order it shouldnt sit around, coupled with some decnt coilovers and polybush kit it will be a monster! its running 160bhp at the moment so with the few extras and a decent dyno tune it should be crazy!
plenty of people have suggested a 1.8t however i wanted an engine which would tie in with my plans and the 80's retro style so the g40 will be staying! underestimated but it will be awsome!
Pics up soon as photobucket is playing up :(
gunnnaaa be shaweeettt! - high detail and a long term project on the way!
Cheers - any comments or help with the g40 conversion itself would be great!

Nice plans. The polo looks awesome. I'm sure youve thought of this but will you be getting a small block shell and fitting gti wishbones and stuff or getting a gti shell and change the engine mount? I thought about a g40 for mine but couldn't find a good engine for the right money. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with this. Judging by the polo, its going to be a good one!.
ive got a gti shell at home now, and will update with pics soon, had to rush off to work and photobucket was playing up! ive been buying mk1 goodies for months without even owning one hahah!
hopefully will be mint!

Thanks! love your golf though!
hopefully the golf will be pretty similar to the speed hunters one, it was really funny, I was talking to a friend about all the parts and did some drawings on how I wanted it to look, then a few days later that article came out and it was near enough what I wanted!
mint! really excited for it, love a good project me, even helping with friends builds, wont see me without a spanner in my hand for long!

unfortunately didnt get any photos when i first collected the shell it as i had broken my phone however its a 1980's gti shell, came with bits of interior dash and seals and some glass!
first things first was weld the cage in heres some pics of the finished article:
got her home from the workshop so i could work on here more, every spare moment i get at the moment!!

put her on my pls hockenhiems off my polo and soon realized they were no where near wide enough despite the 9.0j rears, sat nice with standard arches but not with my plans

next on the list was coilovers! managed to snap a set worth about £500 for the price of £280 - BARGAIN
while waiting for the coilovers a bit of smoothing and rust treatment:

Fitting:

thought it would be a good time to poly bush the front end that i had purchased and paint the arb etc!

lowered onto the coilovers:

the front end is solid! should grip and handle very well!
very nice stance when compared with the other shock/spring setup :

more to come soon and plenty more in the post

tried to prep the inside for the finished colour before it goes too far!
heres some pictures:

rolled her out to prep a sandblasting area:

then started the sanding in the flatter parts:

unfortunately didnt get too many before pictures but im sure you can all imagine, mostly surface rust and a few small holes which were blasted and then filled!

heres the finished result:

then bought primer and a paint gun:

Started the front:

next up bay smoothing and some more paint prep, arches are here now aswell so will upload pics soon!!!!
Cheers any comments or questions?
