Putt Putt My Rusty Nail

Post

Hi all its been a while since I was last on here but I'm back after buying my 3rd mk1.

After selling my mk1 cab many years ago iv done nothing but regret it so I bought a "tidy" and "very honest" tin top.

Found the car on Gumtree and like alot of my past cars I was unable to view before purchasing due to work so there is my first problem. …. After reading the ad it sounded great … A project tho none the less and I'm not afraid of hard work.

Emails back and forth with the selling asking about paint and body and any other problems as the only bad points listed were the fact it's been too for 2 years and that it had a few loom issues.

So I hastily broke my show winning lupo to fund my mk1 obsession and to pay for a car courier to deliver it safely to me as the car was undrivable after the selling had stripped the dash out to self sort the loom issues… This was not mentioned in the listing but seller later mentioned he knew nothing about wiring…. understandably wiring isn't for everyone tho.

I paid my deposit the courier loaded the 1983 originally 1.8 gti and I bank transfered the balance.

2 hours later I was like a little girl at Christmas as the courier drove down my road and to my heartache he off loaded a rusty unloved lump of lies.

I partly blame myself massively as I wasn't able to view the car before sale but after the listed was stated as very honest as the car was "solid" …. the listing was lies.

I bought a golf with rust only every panel but the boot lid that was grey not white.

The filler neck panel has rusted completely through.
Doors ill fitted with rust where they foul the wings.
bonnet rusted.
sunroof leaking it's tits off.
Roof seams rusting.
nearly every component on the mk3 gti engine so corroded.
All the paint in the engine bag is flaking off.
hole in the sill.

Who knows what else I will find.

From the info I found on here plus write ups of the car before I bought her it was an amazing car ONCE.

I know people will say it's ur own fault for not going to view but seriously who lies this much…..

There is a huge difference between car owners and classic car owners.

The previous owner of this poor mk1 one was just a car owner and should never have bought this once fully restored conversion and just bought a corsa.

So the plans for the rusty nail I over paid for …..

She is now in my dry unit but I'm so angry with myself I haven't made a list but iv bought the out filler panel and a new loom.

Can get them welded in no problem. … gonna need a full respray. New wings. Full interior but I knew that.

It's overwhelming tbh and keeping me up at night as I'm writing this at 5am.

I haven't taken any yet but no doubt this thread but soon be pic heavy

That's a shame. Consider selling before you get in to deep?

Welcome back into the fold.

As above ^

If you get a "feeling" for the car, fix it up and then when it's finished stand back and think what it was like when you first saw it 😁

If not, sell it on now as you know it's going to be a money pit 😔

Welcome back and good luck 😊

Hi

The filler neck panel has rusted completely through.
Doors ill fitted with rust where they foul the wings.
bonnet rusted.
sunroof leaking it's tits off.
Roof seams rusting.
All the paint in the engine bag is flaking off.
hole in the sill.

Don't worry, we are too fussy nowadays, this is how most British Leyland cars were delivered in the 70's no wonder the Mk1 was such a revelation.

At least you'll know it's all fixed if you tackle it yourself. BTW any pics of the Lupo?

Welcome back on Ami.

That's a shame, sadly there's some dishonest people out there. Have you considered going back to the seller at all if this is still all very recent?

Whilst it's tough with a private seller, you have some recourse. Maybe if you're lucky you get some money back?

I remember seeing your Lupo and Cabby on FB page before. I love that last shot of your Cabby - it did look beautiful!!

Keep us posted on your progress

i have considered it but i just as much to blame for not viewing the car before the sale so ….

and the seller can just ignore my contact so the best thing i can do is give her some love that she deserves.

just abit of a joke finding his thread on E38 slagging off the previous owner about the bodged wiring and then he just ruined it further with his lack of care just ripping bits off here and there for something to do.

got some pics of the rust  :'(

Sorry to hear it's more work than you thought it was going to be. Hope it doesn't turn out too bad.

I was told my car just needed a couple of sills when I bought it, I've been on 2 years fixing it now and have replaced nearly every panel apart from the roof lol.

I've seen worse!! lol

If you're other VWs are anything to go by then this will be a stunner too.

Have you got the final vision in your head already or will it evolve as you go?

Thanks everyone

The lupo was my baby

No vision for the mk1 yet as I'm still peed off

It will be a show car none the less probably put her on air or hydraulics as I will been keeping the cage in so plenty of space in the back

The seller is on here and had a "build thread" but didn't actually do anything to it after he bought it other than let it rot

Got an ABF loom on its way and got my eye on a gti loom and once iv got the engine running and all the loom spliced and sorted properly i will lift the engine out and start on the body.

Get the rot chopped out and replaced and get her ready for paint …. probably shave the bay while I'm at it.

Bit pushed for space at the unit at the mo with my lupo shell, a bora shell and a mk2 jetta taking up space its had to get it started

What a crying shame that someone would do that kind of thing. I suppose it is the world we live in, which i know is not consolation to you. I wish you luck with your restoration and am sure you will be able to save the car and turn it back to the way it should be.

The seller should be ashamed to do that but i bet they are not.

Ami…
Welcome Back Hun,
Loved the lupo and your cabby.
I guess it can only get better though. There's a few of us been caught out by inaccurate descriptions. But I know you'll sort this and it will be a good one when you've done it. We have a section on here called free cycle so you may pick up some bits for post alone. Worth a look. There's been some good bits about too in parts for sale.
Did you look in the car breaking section on here for a loom before E Bay? You can post up for parts wanted too as you go along. You can get fuel filler panels easy enough and melteddrummers thread is great for viewing for the work he's done.
How's the Ink, you added anymore?
Hope to see this as it progresses.
