Paul who I bought the car from had a new vin plate made as the old one was virtually impossible to read. This needed cutting and grinding to achieve the same dimensions of the original and finally got this done today. Had a dilemma about where to fit it as it seems to be in different places in different motors according to all of the engine bay photos I looked at. Finally settled on further to the right in front of the radiator bracket as it overlaps holes on the left hand side of the slam panel which did not look right. Apologies for poor quality photos; either need to buy a good camera or learn how to take pictures..

Still have to do brakes but will probably leave this to next year as I want to go to a few shows with the original wheels fitted. VDO gauges need connected, get horn working and I am sure I will find another few things along the way.

Mmm, may need to move it then to keep it original. When I was looking at other photos there seem to be variations in where people put them, did VW change it from year to year or is this just personal preference?

No just people put them back in the wrong place, there are two sets of holes with the same spacing, but if you look it can't possibly go where you have it as the plate overhangs and may get damaged or bent.Oldschoolcool said

Thanks for info, will have to do it again! I wonder why the other 2 larger holes are there, is this for different markets?

My tailgate interior trim piece was starting to look a bit tired and warped so had an idea to improve the looks and durability of this part.
My new tools to ensure safe removal and a lack of rust inside the tailgate.
Had a tailgate trim for a mk2 golf (hard plastic) and measured it to find that the raised centre bit was almost the same size as the mk1 trim so set to work cutting it out.
After a bit of filing the edges and drilling the trim clip holes it looked like this.
All that was left to do was to see if it would fit!
And it did; a slight bow in the middle as per the original item but it looks relatively uniform and will be more hardwearing than the original.
I know it won't appeal to purists but it is a practical solution to a heavy traffic area of the car; and it is still using VW parts; can always put it back to original spec. easily.

Woo-hoo, straight through the MOT tonight which in Northern Ireland is a tough one run by a government agency. The test centre closest to me is also a training centre for new staff so they tend to be a bit tighter than usual so well pleased.
