Mk1 GTI Engineering

GTI Engineering

Hi guys I recently started a topic about using a mk1 as a daily and got lots of great advice so thanks for that. I decided to buy the mk1 in the end as I have access to another car if need be and I take the train to work on the weekdays so this is pretty much my weekend car! I was gonna post in the newbie section but technically I'm not new and I've posted before on here too so thought id leave it here as I will add more posts in the coming weeks.

Right onto the car! Its a Helios Blue GTI Engineering 1.8 8v Plus re1800. If anyone doesn't know about GTI Engineering then you need to look them up. They were a company that took mk1s and mk2s and reworked the engines and added little touches to the car itself. My engine had the head worked on and thee bottom end left untouched from what I can gather. I've always loved Helios Blue and secretly wanted this colour mk1 for years. Also as you can tell from my username I used to own a re1900 mk1 and I regretted selling it to this day. So when this came up for sale i thought it was fate! lol

I picked it up on Sunday after a 2 hour drive and instantly fell in love. The bodywork was pretty much perfect as its been restored by a previous owner. I've seen pictures of all the work done and it was a proper window out spray job with al the rust cut out which saves me a headache! It has 14" Pirelli Ps which have been recently refurbed and are mint but its not the route i want to go down so they may be up for sale as I search for a set of wheels to put on instead. It has quad lights on which I want to change to single lights. The interior is either Audi TT or S3 black leather which I want to change back to original. The car also has a Supersprint exhaust system which has a lovely note too.

Next on my list is to acquire a red trim grill with single lights and I might remove the plastic arches for the smaller rear arch spats. It also needs a drop so will be looking to get some coilovers too. I'm undecided on the side decals. Thoughts?

Right anyway here's the pics! (excuse the quality they were at night on my iPhone in a service station!)

Oh wow what a nice find, you must be chuffed with that ;)

Yeah I'd say keep the stripes, would look too plain without.

I'd also suggest hang on to the Ps - you'll probably regret selling them one day ;)

Very nice MK1, keep us posted

Remember being in touch with the previous owner on here, sure it's the same car. -does it have the black waistline trim removed and the bodywork smoothed over where it used to be?

Hi guys thought i'd add a small update seeing as I had some time to spare today. I had recently bought some parts for a cosmetic change to the front end.

This is what it looked like before

And then the after with the change from quad to single light. And a proper red light surround as mine was actually a red sticker fixed by the previous owner! Also changed the clear lights to crosshairs and the clear indicator lenses back to original. And lastly changed the number plate from the surround to a flag free number plate!

I actually did the rear number plate and changed the sill strips from chrome to black as I'm not doing the chrome route.

Next on my list is to fix the reverse light switch and the painfully slow wipers!

The only crosshairs I could find online were the crystal ones which I wasn't that find of. These ones I got lucky and found them on eBay mate. There are items on eBay you just have to search!
The red trim I got from classic vw mate. Good repro item. I got a lot of parts from there. Quality is good

Yea they seem to pop up the odd time so will just have to keep an eye. Have been trying to justify buying the trim new, mad money for what it is! I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy it.Seeing yours has given me a nudge to get going on it!!

Hi so it's been nearly a whole year since I last updated this thread so thought I might add some pics.

Since the last update I've lowered the car on coilovers and sorted the brakes out too. I've now got a G60 brake setup on the front with the bigger 16v servo and master cylinder which means I now don't have to worry how far my car will travel after I slam the brake! I also changed the wheels too as my P Slots wouldn't fit over my brakes! Pics below of the wheels on the car and also one of the rear end as I forgot to add one before
