After years of pining for a mk1 I finally stumped up the cash for an A reg mars red campaign - well Pirelli edition model.
The reason it's a Pirelli as it was imported to the uk when it was brand new as the original owner couldn't wait for a campaign to come on sale.
The cars history is two owners and has covered 198,000 miles and has spent the last 8 years stood in a barn.
These are sone pictures from the day it found its way into my life…….
my my plan is to strip the car in full and do a full body / engine rebuild

Out of interest what documents do you have regarding the importation and the fact that it's a 'Pirelli Edition'? 🤔
The reason why I ask is that I've seen a few people caught out by thinking they have one when basically they have a standard model with the wheels.
Not that we love these cars for profit but I've seen over here the real thing in Concourse condition make €30,000, I don't joke.
Mind you that was with 15,000 miles from New! 😂
Either way it's a great find and I'm definitely delighted to see you taking seriously and clearly doing the job correctly from the start.
Looking forward to watching this project develop over time! 👍🏼 😀

I'm very happy to finally be in the club and can't wait to get behind the wheel one day.
Well, I've applied for its birth cerficate from VW so I hope this will confirm it's Pirelli identity. So far all I've got is confirmation from the DVLA is that it was imported in Aug 1983 and all the red trim and other features are pointing me in the direction of Pirelli edition.
I've also got the VW museum coming back to me with all the documents it can find on it so I'm hoping to get a nice bit of history for it when I finally get it back on the road in January time.

Talking of which… Is that a Vauxhall Firenza in the background?

I've been through various VIN number checks and I'm delighted with my purchase.
Well spotted with the Firenza in the background. The chap who is doing all my bodywork does a lot of custom work and on that car he has mounted an Impreza engine and full running gear to it, he's done some amazing work to it so I'm excited about how my Mk1 turns out.

Now I've checked the vin out etc and have stripped the car, I'm very excited to get it back to its former glory - just minus the red trim!!!

The car is back from the sandblasters and so far the front wings and valance has been replaced.
The rear panel has been cut off ready to be replaced and then it's time for the arches and sills and then various bits and pieces over the car…

Also note in the other thread mentioned, the silver rotbox (reg NUH 798X) made £7,600. Did it actually sell, is it being restored??

Not a clue about the silver one to be honest. Not sure I'd pay that much for one in that condition. I need to spend all my money on this.
Also the engine is now fully rebuilt by Robert Cox engineering so I'm going to get the box exchanged at Crazy Quiffs.
I'll get some more pictures post Christmas once the underside of the cars being worked on.

Is the gearbox U/S? Unless you are certain its fkd I'd just change the 3 seals, the green "tin lid" end cover (its exposed in the wheel arch and collects muck and rots through leaking oil…..) and refresh with 2L semi-synth GL4. They are very robust if not run dry of oil. Mine lasted @200,000 miles before needing work after I, errrr… failed to spot a weeping seal…. and 99% of the time any issues can be fixed with £20 of new selector bushes and a little time spent adjusting.

Gafo I think your right about the EW part of the VIN for a campaign. I've checked this out and mines a Pirelli edition which was imported from Germany in 1983 which was their version of the campaign.
I'll get a few more pics of the bodywork next week when I go to the body shop.

DIY-ing will also keep the original box with the car for the next 30 odd years.

The body has now been completed repaired and is totally rust free and Paul has now undersealed the underneath and is now starting on prepping the shell for a full mars red respray. I'll get some pics from him this week.
The engine is due back in the coming weeks and now I'm looking to get the wheels refurbed and then get a full bush set and hoses set…
