Just another r32 conversion.....

Post

Hi all,

Thought i'd start a project thread for my winter r32 build. Car is an 83' Gti tin top in mars red. I bought it as an unfinished, non-running project around 3 years ago, i put all the glass back in to keep it weather tight, washed it then parked it up and haven't really done a lot to it since, until now.

I've always loved the sound of the r32 v6 engine but not a massive fan of the mk4 so when one came up locally that was mechanically sound but with tatty bodywork for a fairly cheap price, i basically bit his arm off as i knew i wanted to carry out an engine transplant to my mk1. I stripped the mk4 down, sold everything i didn't need & nearly broke even, result!

Anyway here are some pictures to start off, i'll keep this updated as the build progresses over the coming months.

Old engine and box out and sold on to live another day in someone else's mk1.

Then started removing everything else that was left behind, might be in the way or distastefuly added over the years. Including but not limited to crappy wiring repairs, single wiper conversion that leaks rain onto fuse box, badly replaced brake lines and soon to be gone 90's looking mirrors.

Only found a little crusty bit on the scuttle so far but I've got some work to do on the scuttle anyway when I put it back to twin wiper set up.

Heater matrix has been leaking too by the looks of it

Very  kind offer mate, will bear it in mind when I'm stuck. I'm based in Oxford.

Cracked on with stripping the parts I don't need from the engine last night.

Removed the gearbox which is now sold and on route to Germany somewhere.

Thanks. Yours was one of the threads I've been following.

Managed a couple more hours on it this morning. Got it on the ramp and finally managed to get the driveshaft nuts off!

Then tried out my nice new spot weld drill bit and removed various brackets and clips that will no longer be needed.
I then ran out of time. Battery tray is next.
