Finally got the fuel pump mounted in a place that should work.

No tabs on the poverty spec model so had to make two custom brackets to mount the housing. I did try to use and existing mount but as you can see it was hitting the return inlet.

Also learned that the inlet and outlets on the vw heritage tanks sits alot closer together so space is alot tighter and as its gravity fed its alot harder to get it to run parallel.

I'll be running a 044 bosch fuel pump with AN-6 lines. Just have to other the torques fittings to plumb it all up now.

Mk1 is finally off the roll over jig and back to a rolling shell. Next job on the list is to get the bay prepped for paint.

Cracking progress mate! i remember when this car came up for sale 4 years ago i did think of getting it, I'm currently doing the underside on mine too!

So nice to see this back on the road; you've done a top job there!! I owned XPM 566Y for a year or so, in London back in 2008 - when it looked completely stock. I bought it for £250, did some basics, then sold it to a workmate for £800.  Then it went off MOT register a couple of years after, so I figured he'd fcked it. I moved on from Mk1s, cause they got too small as a family car (got classic Saab900 now ),  but do miss them! www.flickr.com/photos/piersmason/albums/72157607625754418

It's a lot of work but I think it's necessary on any mk1 nowadays to keep them maintained. Is yours a GTI?

Hi Plurker, this is great to see, thanks for the information and pictures. Mk1 looked very straight when it was in your pocession. I managed to track down the last owner in the UK before it came oversees go got a good bit of history from him and I still have the original bill of sale which is great to have.

The fella I bought it off in Northern Ireland took it as a trade in and had no interest in vw's and knew nothing about the history either so it was a bit of a gamble but looks to have paid off.

Slowly getting there with it and hoping to have it on the road this summer if all goes well.

Eventually got round to getting the bay sprayed. It's far from a professional finish and yes there is some trash in the paint but I'm delighted with the results. Will definitely be doing more spraying in the future.

I used L041 2k paint with a 2:1 ratio and 10% base thinner. It's important to make sure the circulated air is warm with good ventilation. When applying coats go slowly to wet the surface. Allow 10-15 min in between coats. Depending on what you want you can go for 2-3 coats.

Thanks a million, appreciate it. Covid and Brexit have really started to slow things down though but doing what I can for now.

So started to stripdown the ABF block. Nothing too crazy happening with this just inspecting it to see the overall condition. I'll be replacing all gaskets, belts, bolts and giving the block a freshen up before reassembling it.

So going to put this down to inexperience and stupidity. Brand new stainless steel sump bolts (from eBay admittedly) decided they didn't want to be part of the build and when from righty tighty to lefty loosey.

Tried to salvage them but it was a loosing battle. Going to leave it into the machine to be redrilled and rethreaded.

Today's lesson: Just buy your hardware from Volkswagen directly.

Thought about becoming a heroin addict as a cheaper alternative to finishing the project but decided to push through.

Got a few parts painted and started to rebuild the block.

Engine rebuild is coming along nicely. Replaced all gaskets and seals along with the waterpump. New timing and auxiliary belt to go in also. Freshened up the block with a lick of paint and wrapped the exhaust manifold (fun job).

Currently waiting on stainless steel engine bolt kit for final assembly.

Been a while since I update this. Where to start. I purchased an original mk2 1.3 with 56,000 miles during lockdown which took over some time trying to get it reconditioned. We also started a mk2 syncro build in the shed and I did manage to get some work done to the Mk1

Work to the interior, fully painted and soundproofed, very happy how this turned out.

Next up was the engine. Bit of a fiddly job due to lack of space but we managed to wiggle it into it's place followed by the wiring loom.

Barry was able to sort out the wiring for me which really cleaned up the bay. Gearbox had to be dropped due to a leaking rear main seal which I forgot to replace . Pig of a job with the engine in the car. Once that was sorted though we were able to get the engine reassembled for the final time. Such a nice engine in the Mk1.
