resto and 1.8T build

Hi everyone,

Thought it was about time I made one of these.

I bought my cabby nearly 2 yrs ago now. It is a 1987 Alpine White 1.6 carb model with colour coded small bumpers (although I'm not sure if these are original. looks like its had a bad spray job done at some stage in it's life with lots of over spray in places).

I ran her for about a year as standard which was fun but it has its problems as any 27 yr old 135000 mile car (with no service hx) does.

The bodywork is reasonably solid with only one small area of welding needed at the drivers front arch and some surface rust under the bonnet and inside but I want to get the bodywork to a really high standard so will be having a full glass and engine out respray before the mechanical work happens.  The roof was replaced by the previous owner and is fairly new and in good condition which is nice.

The interior is blue/red plaid (HC/HM according to cabby-info) and needs a bit of TLC. The front carpet has seen better days and needs replacing. The front seats have a couple of tears so will need sorting. I dont think is the original as it doesn't match up with the sticker codes in the boot.

So, for the past 12 months shes has been garaged up and slowly stripped back whenever i get a chance.

So onto the plan! Most of the parts I've collected just need to get on with the work.

Engine

1.8 T AGU engine and CDA gearbox with 70k
VR6 Clutch and G60 Flywheel
BBT K418B Turbo
K04 exhaust manifold
Track Slag K04 3" downpipe
Jetex air intake
Forge DV valve
Mocal Oil cooler
E36 Bmw fuel pump
New fuel lines
Standard AGU ECU
14" slim line fan
E36 Top fill rad
FMIC

Brakes

Custom pedalbox with hydraulic clutch and brake setup
Wilwood dynalite front calipers and 256mm discs
Rear Mk2 discs and calipers
braided pipes
New brake lines
New bearings all round

Suspension

AP Springs and shocks (fitted)
H+R Anti rollbar kit
New poly bushes all round

The next jobs that i need to do is get the rear beam off and the fuel tank out so i can check for any rust.

I'll get some photos up later on.

Well i'm terrible at updating these kind of things but its about time i put up some photos. I'll have some more to come in the next few weeks hopefully of the build along the way.

So over the past 3 years I've made some slow progress, with plenty of issues and setbacks along the way but I wont get into that.

Its had a full respray in Alpine White and has finally got the 1.8T AGU lump in and running.

Its had everything off and powdercoated that can be and fresh bushes and fixings all round.

Its away getting a few issues ironed out at the moment so looking forward to having it back to finish off and finally drive before the summer is over!

Its still needing the interior and sound system finishing along with a proper tune and next year I think it'll need a LSD fitting and tidy up some of the coolant piping and maybe some coilovers.

I might also swap the standard ECU out for something else. Would be good to hear anyones opinions on the current aftermarket ECU offerings out there.

The O.Z.turbos i rebuilt from the sorry state i got them in and I'm very happy with how they turned out. I have had the faces polished to a brush finish and then wet laquered. I rebuilt them with the original bolts however they have already started to rust again so i think i'll need to swap them out for some new ones when i get some time.

Anyways excuse the birdsh-t on the bonnet and the dirt, heres the pics!

I've driven it about 100miles or so on them. They are not bad. Fairly comfortable and stiff enough. Just think I'd like it a bit lower.

Thats hood news, I did have a set delivered but they weren't complete and then found them for £80 less so they went back.
Waiting for the next lot to arrive now.

What configuration have you gone for? I've ordered the 60 rear / 30 front kit

Nice FZR by the way

If i remember they are 30 all round. Looks better than standard but not quite low enough.

Haha thanks dude i love anything with an engine be it two wheels or four. Its actually a YZF750R rather than a FZR, has a big dent in the tank on the other side and a few cracks starting in the fairings that need dealing with but not bad for a '93

About time for another update thanks to Corona.

I’ve dug through all my photos I’ve built up through the build so thought I should post them.

Since the last update I’ve made a visit to Carl Chorley to get my roof sorted. He swapped out the headliner, rear window frame and the middle padding and got it fitting properly. Awesome difference, no more leaks. Need to get some photos taken of this.

I’ve swapped the ECU for a Link G4 unit and tuned by RB Motorsport, so now running perfect with high/low boost settings. The low is perfect, the high boost is wild.

The front seats have been sorted by GLT Trimming and look much better.

A few little touches like fuel filler sticker and bumper blanks done.

I’ve given the cabby a fair amount of use over the past 2 years, driven to Scotland and back a few times.

Have picked up a few issues I need to work through over then coming months:

1. Split Vertical steering rack boot.

2. Cabin heater fan stopped working

3. Radio needs properly installing

Next big jobs is to tidy up the engine bay. I’m looking to swap the current radiator out for something bigger and alloy (currently gets a bit hot in stopped traffic) and make some small changes.

How the bay currently sits:

I’ve picked up my share of stonechips and there’s bits of bodywork I’m not happy with (cheap pattern parts that I shouldn’t have used) that need sorting but that can wait for now.
