Campaign Slow Rebuild

83 Campaign Edition rebuild by a total novice!

Hi guys, I finally managed to get my GTi into my garage, and so the fun begins. It will be a long, slow process as I work a lot and have a new kid and a missus and we're doing a house rebuild in spare time so won't have too much time to work on the car, but I'll do what I can and where and update as and when!

First thing I thought I should do when home was to get the water out of there, as the seal around the sunroof is buggered and will continue to pour in until it's covered over. (My garage roof is even worse!)

Anyway, here's a few pics of how she was when I first saw her:

And back home:

Today I managed to take the rest of the carpet out to see how much rust was under the floor, and I was quite surprised to see there wasn't (too) much under there.

Here's how it looked when I started: (passenger side)

Some water scooped out:

Old, saturated soundproofing. Had that old bog smell about it:

Found some council diamonds:

Dripping wet carpet out:

More water!

Got as much as I could out for now:

Floor isn't as bad as I expected, although I haven't fully inspected the car yet, so I know there's probably a lot more to come!

I'm not sure which direction to take with it yet, as I've always wanted to but never done this before, but I know I want to completely strip it and sort the rust out, then either put it back to as close to standard as I can, or just do my own thing with it. Any suggestions/advice is welcome! (And probably needed)

I think there must be a few cars across Somerset with an interior as soggy as that. Amazing that the floor pan looks so good.

What's the body kit - is it a Late Cabrio one and are you going to keep it or return too original?

I don't really know what the bodykit is, I didn't actually meet the seller, it was a friend of a friend kind of thing so I haven't got much history with it. I quite like the kit but I can't make my mind up on the handle-less doors. I'm swaying toward getting handles back on and go for original at the minute.

Also, does anyone know what to make of this sticker? I found it UNDER the carpet: (if the image quality is ok)

Nice looking project. Love the wheels.

Floor pan looks in great shape considering how much water it was holding

Good luck with your build, keep the updates coming.

Looks like it was sprayed silver at some point in it's life, I think it was originally black. Hopefully the silver at least gave it a little more protection against the months of rain that has collected inside!
I should be up at weekend so I'll get it completely dry and see where to go from there.
Thanks for the comments guys!
