Mk1 GTI 16V
I returned to the UK cause of the COVID pandemic and have had the bug since returning. Tonight I got her running. Idling high but running.
Put in a second haNd engine I bought in 14. Replaced everything on it. Will see how it goes till i recondition the old one. Will post pictures of the mess as i do it.
Tank, pump and lines are horrible. Will be replacing them after welding the rear end.
Rebuilt the jetronic system and done a seal replacement on the metering head.
Onto the running of it now, will have to clean and tweak the entire bay but looking forward to it.
Heres some pics.Ill try keep it updated.
Thanks for those of you who have helped so far.

The ISV was not on correct when started before, the wiring was not in the right places and air intake / vacuum hoses were not all connected. Once this was rectified is when it no longer starts Old cars i suppose, and once that’s been sitting far too long.
I started by checking system pressure for fuel, all good (WUR not functioning properly. However, its got continuity at plug and is seeing the correct system pressure its just noon changing during cranking or running)
Removed all injectors checked spray, all good. No drips so decided to try cranking instead of pos feed to check spray. NOTHING. Being a tad frustrated i though right lets see if i can manipulate the AF Plate. Forced open with small piece of metal to see if its indeed fuel the issue wiht starting. Started first time, didnt idle obviously or run great but that’s expected.
Removed all the induction hoses cleaned and checked condition all fine.
Still wont start.
Took air filter off from bottom, cranked it over with my hand underneath to see if there is suction, there does seem to be but not enough to start. When you lightly press the AF plate i can get it to idle but manually.
The 5th injector is not working. The ISV is not working. So will order new of both but i thought it would still start without these. Especially when i can manually do it. I wonder if the rest position is too low or something else…….
Well will hopefully get some more time next week to play about, I was convinced it was vacuum but since feeling underneath I’m not sure. Will replace the WUR and other bits but i suspect it wont make a difference
Anyone have any opinion happy to hear it.

So since getting it running and idling correctly it was flashing oil pressure, running lumpy possibly on 3 and noticed a drip of oil.
Next jobs are to run the temp fuel pipes into Jerry can and re attach the pump and accumulator and attach rubber pipes to body, Remove tank and old lines.
Put on new brakes set up including new front pipes (previously been cut off - long story)
New dizzy cap, rotar arm, leads and check ignition timing. Replace all the engine sensors then off to get welded. Should see some wire at the end of the month.
Will post some pictures as i go through the list.

She managed which was good.
The metal water pipe sprung a leak, will get from VW heritage tomorrow. Tank, Axel and Fuel lines ready to drop when i get a ramp.
New braking system (potential servo bleed nipple issue) and this pipe will be the jobs for next few weeks.
Still got the bug though

What's the condition of yours?
Mine has sat due to starting a cider business and moving house but just got my rear chassis repair plates so the welding should be done this year

After i got back from the factory i had a split radiator hose so when i went to leave the office the car looked very sad with coolant all over the car park, patched and limped home. Got home and had a full set of new hoses arrive the day before, as it happens, so fixed that and now an oil leak. As you say, all part of the fun and the bug !
I look forward to seeing progress.

I did manage to fit a pair of new rear light clusters on the car which are more in keeping with the original look rather than the fully smoked ones. I was pleased with that.
I have some new seats coming at the end of the month and fitting these is going to be my next milestone.
I must start my own thread too.
