Newbie
almost finished project from South Africa
I recently "finished" this project (are they ever done?!). A bit of work on the head lead to a lot else. Bought 3 years ago, and after my 'mechanic' convinced me to take the engine out, I didnt see the engine for a further 2 years! After much encouraging, convincing, pleading, bribes and sleepless nights, I finally received the engine back. From that point I was on my own and set out to finish her off. Everything listed, except for the engine internals, was done by myself. It's been a steep learning curve, in mechanics and shady mechanics alike. However, thanks to this forum I was able to find the encouragement and knowledge I needed to get the job done! Just a thanks to all who contribute their wisdom and experience here. Without all of you, I would probably still be bashing my head and cutting up my knuckles in a puddle of blood and sweat.
Sitting a little over 271 000km total, with rebuild just under 1000km ago. All original with its K-Jetronic functioning flawlessly. All original glass except for the windscreen. MFA working, except for OAT. Car is clean, with no rust, though shows its age here and there in the paintwork. All in all, the work done:
Head skimmed and gasket replaced
New pistons, valve guides and resurfaced seats
Crank skimmed, new big end bearings and gearbox main seal
Rear bearings, cylinders, shoes and handbrake cables. Rear left drum
New master cylinder
New timing belt and tensioner
New oil pump
Rocker cover gasket
Injectors cleaned and tested
Original distributor rebuilt
New bonnet release cable, exhaust hangers, hazard switch and more.
Not sure of it's worth as I havent seen many(or any) around, or for sale, but I will be enjoying the product of my labour for now!
