The car won't be a sportline model, its too early. Sportline cars were a limited edition which started around Jreg I think. They had bbs rims, recaro seats, black VW grille badge, and sportline motif on the rear 1/4 panels to name a few extras. Also they had electric roof and windows as did all cabrios from 1990 on.

ie air filter, brakes and a nice new stereo!,
Simon,
Personally I'd advise against changing the air filter as the k-jetronic system actually works best with the standard dry paper filter. The jetex style washable filters can allow tiny particles of the oil they are cleaned with into the injector system and it can cause problems. You won't see any performance increase anyway as there is plenty of air available for the engine either way.
Whatever you do, do not put one of the alternative air intake systems on your car, the injection system is very sensitive to air flow and these systems will cause starting, idling and lumpy running problems!
As for the brakes, they have a largely undeserved bad reputation. You will probably find that if you replace all the main components with new originals, lubricant the moving parts and pay attention to brake fluid you'll find they actually work very well!
Agree with you on the stereo though - just don't cut any holes in the parcel shelf! If you do want bigger speakers back there, make yourself an MDF shelf and keep the original one tucked safely away!
Cheers,
Drew.

Totally agree - renewed the pads and discs on mine yesterday and braking vastly improved even though still bedding in. Also bled the brake system a bit which cleared a couple of air bubbles and some detritus in the fluid - peddle much firmer now
