Welcome! I'm no mechanic but my first thought with clipper carbs and running issues, after the basics, are usually to do with the standard pierburg carb which is known to be problematic and often changed for a weber version, or fuel filler/tank/lines getting clogged with rust and debris over the years.

Compulsive buyer of knackered VWs!!!

Thanks
have the fuel injection engine fitted
so may be something to do with that.
has had a new lift pump and fuel filter within the last year.
Looks like fuel filler pipe has a small amount of corrosion could be that.
but gets better when warm the judder

Sounds like fuel pipe rust issue. Change fuel filler pipe and then give tank a good clean check condition by removing fuel pump. And magnets. Change tank if any doubt. Then give all fuel lines an air blow to upto filter.then change filter (hopefully doing job )and collecting the waste/rust. Very common issue and 1 I suspect I'm beginning to have again on one of my cars.
