Starting problem with 83 GTI

I have recently purchased an 83 GTI, its been a long time since I have owned one of these cars, but I just had to have another one. I have a problem with starting the car. It starts fairly quickly, but will idle roughly for a few seconds and quits. After about 5 or 6 trys it finally stays running, and seesm to run great after that…
Any ideas?????

Fuel pump??? Mine finally died after being rough for 8 months

Crap in the fuel system - change the filter
