Newbie saying Hi and needing advice.

Hi all,

just a quick note to say hello to everyone.

Have just taken ownership of a 1983 MK1 Campaign in Schwartz Black. It is completley standard other than lowering springs and a dodgy sounding stainless back box from GSF. Needs a little TLC, but is pretty good condition considering its age (has all orig panels). The intention is to restore to good/excellent condition but not concours.. "as I don't do polishing" and I want to drive it.

The first job on my extremley long list is to fix the sunroof, it appears the mechanism that opens it is broken. You turn the handle and nothing happens. I am unable to see how I get access to the mechanism or even get the sunroof out. The haynes, is not exactly helpful on this matter. Also am I able to buy replacement parts for said mechanism if it is broken.

Any guidance will cheerfully be accepted.

I also have for sale a MK1 Fibre Glass Hatch, bought ages and ages ago if any one is interested. It is the outer skin only and was going to be used for a racing MK1. Selling due to getting an originallity complex. Looking for ?120.00 ovno (orig cost ?250.00). Collection only due to fragile nature of part. I am in Southampton.

Many thanks

Luigi.

Hi dirk and welcome.

I have sunroofs if you need some spares.  I expect the plastic connections have bust on yours - you should be able to push the back down and back to open it and see what the problem is.

Hi all,

sorry for the delay in posting only have Tinternet access currently once or twice a week.

I have now purchased a digital camera and will be taking numerous pictures to upload them for you guys to view, hopefully this weekend.

Its nice to see a forum who appreciates other makes of car. I have often been riduculed at other forums by owning "different" types of cars.

My current x1/9 is under powered with a noisy engine but is brilliant to drive with superb handling due to the mid engined layout. Admittidly many do rust and need a lot of TLC in comparison to other makes of car. The same goes for the Alfasud (except this is front wheel drive).

Thanks for the advice with the sunroof, not had a chance to look at it yet though. However crazy quiff may have some more business coming his way, after looking at his website.

kind regards

Luigi..

p.s I am not italian, just nickname given to me by mates..due to the amount of italian cars I own  :D..its has sort of stuck!

Is it a 1.3 or 1.5 X1/9? I always found the 1.5 was pretty much as quick as the 1.6 GTI. Mid engine handling too. Much more pure than the later Toyota MR2.

Drew,

My x1/9 is currently the 1500cc version. I have only driven a 1.6 gti once and not for any great distance, but I think that the golf is quicker however saying that… the x1/9 feels quicker…if you know what I mean..

I have also had a go in a Mk1 MR2 a little while back and as with most Japanese cars needed a bit of revving to get it going  was pretty quick with reasonable handling, but it felt like a two seater limo..nice a comfy … 8)  whereas the x1/9 is more of a sportscar…a bit more raw..
