New to all this!

Hi all :) Well, after watching a random film last week with a Clipper in it I suddenly found I had a desperate need for one! After trawling though eBay I came across a possible on at £800 so decided to watch it until the end to see how high it would go. Hmmm, turned out it didn't go up at all and I ended up winning it for £820 :oWondering what we'd got ourselves into we pootled off to Portsmouth last night to pick it up fearing I may have bought a complete donkey. Turns out it wasn't and the bodywork was perfect, it had a new roof and Pirelli wheels and I fell head over heels for it. Admittedly there was excessive play in the steering and the brakes were appalling but I could live with that :)It had a couple of issues such as fuel gauge not working, no dash lights, no radio and no indicators but these are all little things I could deal with. However, about 20 miles into a 60 mile journey I lost 5th gear and by the time we reached Surrey I'd also lost 3rd!!! I then bottled it and got my other half to drive it the rest of the way while I followed in our other car!

Still, it could have been worse and we made it all the way back to south east London without further mishap so he can pop on a new gearbox and we'll be sorted.

Anyway, sorry for waffling and here's a couple of pics. Looking forward to getting lots of help from this great site

Great purchase Mrs!! Even with the issues you've   raised, well worth it. You will probably find a referb kit for your gear selector will sort that out. You can get them from Crazy Quiffs on here for a very reasonable price! Your electrical issues will be minor gremlins. If you sign up for membership theirs plenty of discounts to be had too…

It's good to see another female of the species has joined up! I've loved classic Vw's all my driving life (about 18 years) and when I go car hunting with my hubby we get some raised eyebrows when he stands back and I do all the poking and prodding!!

Hi! It's always good to have as many women on board as you can :thumbs:Sadly I'm no expert but I'm keen to learn and have picked up stuff from my other half as we have a 1973 VW Campervan (just sold our old one, new resto time!) so he loves the Golf too :)Can't wait to get it on the road

Welcome aboard. Looks tidy.
Make sure the brown white wire is connected to the corner stud of the rocker cover. From there a earth strap goes to the bolt that holds the coil mounting bracket in place. This is earth point for the clocks.
Could be a dead fuse too.
If after all that the clocks are all dead it could be the voltage regulator on the back of the clocks.
That's the fun thing but also the frustrating thing, looking trying and then fixing lol.

Enjoy your new purchase.
Oh and hurry up the sun is out today. Roof down, shades on lol.

Cheers
