New member with mk1 golf diesel...

Hi,
Like the club. Some stunning Golfs! Just wondering if I'm the only member with a 1983 Golf C Diesel 1588cc 5 speed! Let me know if you do!

Hi,

Welcome to the club.  Not many Mk1 diesels around so I expect you might be the only one!

I've got a 91 Caddy Diesel. Does that count?

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

Hi,
I've heard about the early 1.5 diesels. Did you get a good reception at the festival in it? Glad it's in good nick! The diesels don't seem to get the mention they deserve! Very rare now though. Thinking of taking mine to show in Rhyl in May seen as I have smartened it up a bit (full respray, mk1 alloys and lowered etc.) I'm very proud of it 'cos it goes very fast for what it is (more than keeps up with modern cars no probs - 1588cc is a decent amount even nowadays I suppose) and still gets LOADS to the gallon.

Hi,
That does count I suppose, same engine and everything! Just no pick up on the back! Is it a five speed? Bet it's burgundy like mine!? Most are.
Happy chugging!

Its Apline white. Yes is 5 speed, much better than the 4 speed Diesel Jetta I had errr…. almost 20 years ago 8O . It chugs along very nicely doing 50-55mpg and coped brilliantly in the snow this week.

Bought some glow plugs cheap on ebay and thought I would do some preventative maintenance and wished I?d never started, 3 hrs of mental and physical torture esp as the ?old? plugs that I took out looked like new.  :banghead:

Why can?t I have a hobby like fishing or stamp collecting instead of messing about with old MK1s

our last car was an x reg 1.5 mk1 diesel, unfortunately a B(ig)M(acho)W(*****) wrote us off and drove away. the helpful insurers we were with towed it away from leeds to scotland and then gave us ?100 pound after having paid about ?350 fully comp for 4 years. thanks!

i'd have rather given it away. didn't know how rare at the time though!

it was a great car never any bother.

nice one

That's a shame   Hate to see a nice Golf go to waste. Shame on that BMW driver!   Maybe you could get another mk1…there's been a few non-GTI models on ebay etc. including an immaculate 1.5 diesel!
Keep on chugging mk1's :D

we have mk1 campaign now!

but we still think of the diesel 'green machine' with fond memories as it was our 1st mk1.

I would be nice to see some Mk1's with the new wave of VAG diesel engines fitted.

I know of a couple of mk2's over here running them and a Caddy in the states.

Imagine 200+bhp, all that torque and still returning 50+MPG  8) and all in a lightweight mk1 shell

Surely can't be long before we see one - that would be a cracking mod but are current diesel engines still heavy? may make the handling fun?

yeah esp if you use the 6sp box one of them weighs almost the same as a mk1

Still cant be heavier than a VR motor although returning silimlare power yet much better fuel consumption, I know the VR engined mk1 are pretty rare but I do know of quite a few caddys running them.

Hello!
What do you lot reckon a 1.9 diesel would be like in a mk1? Is there a mk2 engine that would do the trick? That's probably what I'll go for but I doubt the original 1.6 is ever gonna give up! It'll probably out-last the rest of the car. Would be good though, as I personally find the original engine very nippy in such a light car, let alone a 1.9!

Bit ironic how you called it 'green', it's got to be the least environmentally friendly mk1! Maybe that was the joke? I've got to admit though, you see a lot more smoke from L Reg Fiestas and than I kick out in mine, it's mainly when you strike it up…catch those unsuspecting passers-by! Hee hee!
P.s - enjoy the GTI!

Nice 1, is it 5 speed too? I've yet to meet anyone with a 5 speed (original) gearbox in a hatchback diesel! You got any pics? Wack one in the gallery - I'd love to see it. Is it still running ok, daily driver?  8)

It is a 5 speed, original gear box, 1983.  Was running fine until last week when the diesel pump packed up.  Red, Hatchback.  I'll try and post some piccys some time this week!  All original interior, needs some TLC, not sure what to do with it.  :D

Well, if you ever want to sell it (in any condition if it still needs parts/repairs) my dad's always wanted a 5 speed diesel mk1 Golf so would buy it for a fair price! He's kept mine on the road and would really look after it. Glad there's still a couple about anyway.  :D  The one I have had been in the wars , me and my dad saved it from rotting outside on my uncle's farm! Done a full respray & repaired damaged bodywork etc. & smartened up the rest. The engine was just too good to scrap (pic of it in the gallery - burgundy/gambia red one)
Hope you get the pump sorted. Keep us posted! I'll look out for the pic!
