Im 17, and im looking for my first car. Ive been looking at loads of possible cars, and I really like the mk1 golf. I was just wondering on what your thoughts are on a mk1 as a first car. Ive got about ?2750 for the car and insurance, I havent got a quote on a mk1 yet, but im imagining that if I get a 1.6 (which would be nice) its gonna be pretty high. :dontknow:
Any thoughts or advice you have is gladly welcome.
Cheers

Best idea is get some insurance quotes and see what you can afford to insure, and then go looking for a car the suits your requirements. You'll get a good example of a smaller engined mk1 for under ?1000 although it will probably need some work on it at this price.
As mentioned though, if you not driven one yet, then it might be worth trying to find someone who'll let you have a go in one, so you can see if you like it. Everything is vastly different to a modern car, gearboxes are stiffer, no PAS means the steering is heavier than you'll be used to, and the brakes need a lot of effort! They are however very enjoyable to drive once you got used to these differences.
Good luck in your search!!

I love the look of the mk1s, my brother drives an Integrale Evo, which I believe was designed by the same guy. I think its them headlamps which gives it just the right look, think thats what the newer golfs are missing.
Anyway, thanks again for the advice, ill try and get some quotes and see how things work out.

Insurance is always a problem at our age  so there isnt really much difference between a mk1 and a new car.
I think with your budget you could find a nice example of a 1.1 or 1.3 model with very minor work needed, and still afford insurance 8)
Good luck!
