Morning everyone
just thought I'd say hello - I've just bought a 1982 5dr diesel which I have to admit I've had coilovers and porsche fuch wheels fitted to - I hope thats OK with you guys
ops: - that is the limit to the modifications though.
Anyway I'll probably use your expertise in the future when things go wrong - I'm off to post a question in the technical section now!
Cheers
Simon

Ah ha! Another diesel! Welcome to the club! What colour is your mk1, I may have seen it advertised (depending where you got it). 5 speed? My 82 diesel's in the 'Post your fave pic section' in chat. No mods apart from the 9 spokes and mk2 seats. Planning to lower on some different wheels this summer and tidy up the bodywork. I'll await your pics!

hi dude - mine is white with black trim and it is a 5 speed, it was for sale in Colchester but now resides with me in North London.
As an experienced Diesel owner can I point you in the direction of my query in the tech section just to get your opinion - thanks
sorry no chance for photos this weekend - bad weather and then fathers day, I'll try to take some this evening - weather permitting.

Looks fantastic! Looks good in white. I'm planning on the same look for mine (with different wheels I've come across), what roof-rack have you got on it? Beetle one?
P.S - was your Golf in Autotrader? ?750 ish? :
As far as owning a mk1 diesel is concerned I've had two in the last few years. Both 1.6 5 speed models. My first had a hard life before I owned it and was a tad rough, though still a reliable daily driver and a great drive. That's now off-road for a 1.9td engine upgrade. My current one is much better all round. Bert (forum name) is the man to ask for engine/technical info on this site…I am a mere admirer of the cars with sod all in the way of in-depth knowledge
ops: Although that's the beauty of them, they only really need general up-keep and when anything does need changing it's simple enough for anyone who's half handy to do!
Congrats on a great car, I hope you appreciate the diesel model as much as I do! Don't get me wrong, I'd have a GTi aswell if funds allowed!
(P.S -if you ever want to sell it I know someone on here who really wants a good mk1 diesel). :y:

Thanks for the comments - yes its the one in autotrader
The roofrack is an original Swedish rack from the 70's made by Thule - I don't think it is for any car in particular as it is adjustable.
I'm with you re the deisel thing - its far more powerful and economical that my previous aircooled cars and is suprisingly nippy.
I have to say I bought it because it was a 5dr and a deisel as it was out of the ordinary - everyones got a Gti!

How refreshing! Someone who got it BECAUSE it's a 5 door. 90% of people much prefer a 3 door for the looks. P.S - it was around ?5,500 new, possibly more with the 5 speed gearbox! I'm glad you like it. Someone else on this site nearly bought the same car. It was only the amount of doors that put them off so they say.
As long as you're not obsessed with doing 0-60 in 8 secs (which you won't be - having driven aircooleds) then you'll be more than happy with the performance. You can chug along in 5th gear, and it pulls well from the bottom end in all gears for a really smooth ride (and get 60mpg), or you can find that extra few cm of accelerator pedal and drive like a maniac if you want! They're certainly responsive. More than enough for modern traffic. Plus once you get up to speed on a motorway there's no stopping them! Impressive for what they are, a naturally aspirated 54hp diesel!
What did you have before by the way?

I have to say that I'm currently in the drive it like a maniac catagory at the moment, especially with it being so low it handles like a go-kart.
My previous v-dubs are as follows:-
1972 1300 beetle
1969 type 3 squareback
1965 type 3 notchback custom
1968 type 3 notchback rat look
1955 oval window beetle
mk3 golf 1.4
1969 type 3 squareback rat look
1985 mk2 scirocco
1962 type 3 notchback
I think that's it
