MK1 GX owner new here
Hello, whilst searching the web I found this site which is just what I need.
I actively partake in other forums for my other old cars, and used to use the club Gti website but it was a bit general and I was pleased to find something for the Mk1, there's much more specific info on here.
I inherited a very clean MK1 GX via my family 3 years ago. it's fairly original, I've done small improvements like a CD player and lumenition.
It rolled onto a genuine 50k miles last week!!!!!
Plans for this year include fitting a webber as it's a bit slow and has recently become difficult to start from cold. Might lower it an inch too but want to keep it fairly standard looking.
Expect some spring and carb questions soon……

So that's what it looks like with Mk1 GTi Alloys, have been thinking about getting some of them. Have seen full sets go for ?40 - ?70 including tyres, that's cheaper than 2 new tyres.
Can you post a pic with yours side on so I can get a better impression?
Does yours sit low at the back compared to the front? mine does a little so might drop the front a bit so it's level. Front is too high anyway.
Thanks for all kind comments.

Not many photos at that angle!
Sometimes I notice it higher at the front than the back, other times not.
Yep GTI alloys - I believe mine came with them as an option though :/
I saw a set of them - they're called Tarantulas - go for ?50 with new tyres on eBay recently. Wanted them as they were mint and mine are a bit scratched but couldn't afford at the time!
Got any more photos of yours?

PS - I'm after those wheel arch spats and mudflaps - if you get my wheels, and I get those, they really will be twins! lol

Hi,
Nice GX…both of you
You can buy the arch spats new from Crazyquiff by the way :
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard.masters2/ArchSpats.htm
I'd recommend the alloys. If you swap they're noticably lighter than the steels (multiply it by 4 or 5 wheels and you can only help the situation!) And of course, most agree, look better.

Cheers for the link Diesel - I'd actually been waiting until payday (yesterday) to buy both spats and mudflaps from Richard (Crazyquiff) - I'll do it this very minute!
For those who don't know, other good things on this link from Crazyquiff - especially the dash vent kits!!

What a beautiful pair of GX golfs. Diamond silver is such a lovely colour.
I wonder if the replacement spats are grey or black.

I've got some in the car waiting to go on. TBH, I didn't sit down and think "Are they grey or black?" but I didn't think "They look grey.."
I'll check for you tomorrow

Thanx . I do think either colour would look fine. My ones seem quite light grey in colour (maybe a bit faded), thats all. Will take them off this summer to see if there is any problem underneath as they've never come off before- will be xtra careful with the fittings.
God, I wish I had a GX though. The practicality of a 5 door well-trimmed car with more power than my small block golf. Loved the colours they came in too.

So get one
They're not that pricey when they do come up. Mine was ?700. ?775 including the flights to Glasgow for Dad and me to pick it up, and the petrol to drive back
The ones you see aren't always in fantastic condition but keep an eye out and one'll come up

Welcome aboard.
Very nice, standard looking car you have there. It's rare to see one that hasn't been altered in some way.
I think MK1's all have a tendency to have a saggy rear end ops: but this could be due to the age of the springs and worn bump stops too.
