Good luck with your driving test! As a new male driver your best bet is to keep the engine size of your car as low as poss to keep costs down. 1.1 or 1.3 petrol etc, as I'm sure you know. Although a mk1 Golf will be pricier to insure than some other granny-ish cars with a similar engine (Citroen AX, Metro etc), but that's the price you have to pay to be cool and drive something nice!
That car you're interested in sounds like a Mk2 rather than a Mk1? An H reg hatchback? Any photos or advert links to it, if it's still for sale?

My son insured his Series 1 1.1 Mk1 a year ago and paid around 1500. He was 19, so a little older than you and I'm not sure if that would make a difference? :dontknow:
I agree that the age of the Golf you're interested in makes it sound like it might be a Mk2. If you can put a pic up of it, or one very similar (maybe a link to one on ebay or something) we'll be able to help you.
Great choice for a first car whether a Mk1 or a Mk2 though :
(Although we're obviously a bit biased to the MK1 on here  )
