What's the symptoms?  The most likely thing experienced is the fuel lines clogged with crap because the filler neck is rusting (where you put your fuel… that pipe).  There are numerous other symptoms and causes so if your stuck post up in the technical section for help.  Welcome to the site and hope you get it resolved

well, basically to start off with it just kept cutting out, it would run fine for the first ten minutes then just cut out if u didnt keep your foot on the accelerator, my father in law took it to a friend who guarantee'd me is was sorted….now tho its revving itself and is very juddery, almost like im in too high a gear, but im not. when the bloke said he had fixed it he also took some pipes away saying there were too man.

u will avto excuse me not been able to explain fully i no nothing about cars! lol, thanks for the replys :)

its had quite abit done to it to before to try solve the problem of it cutting out, it had a new alternator fitted a couple of months back, as that had gone, then it had a new distibutor cap and arm fitted it had a water leak and we got that sorted, and we have had the petrol pipe replaced, its had the timing done and something else but im not sure what.

also ive been told its got a clutch cable in it for a rover?! i bought the two clutch cables it could be for my car and they were both too long!!

get a clutch cable from GSF mate as the wrong one isn't doing you any favours.

It could be the warm up regulator if it's the gti… honestly thogh there are some seriously clever people on here that could help you but you need to put it in the right section.  If your car is 1.6 upwards put it in the big block section anything smaller in the small block section.

, and we have had the petrol pipe replaced

Which one and why?  Have a look in your fuel tank for debris, common issue,  theres an access point under the rear seat to look in there.  Sounds like some sort of fuelling issue tbh but would really need to know what engine it is to go further.

Hard to tell without knowing if its carb or injection, sounds like a fuelling issue anyway.

if it's revving itself it could be an auto choke issue? getting a garage to fit you a weber replacement carb may help?

Pop a post up in the fueling section of the technical boards and we'll do our best!!!

actually now you mention the choke, when i got it back my father in law said aaw we took the choke off... could that be the problem, cos wen i told my dad they had done that he couldnt understand why.

The carb which is probably on it will be a pierburg 2E2 carb, there is a wax stat, a bi metalic coil and a vacuum opperated pull down unit which operate the automatic choke if i remember correctly.. They are a nightmare to set up once you are getting problems with it and the best solution as stated is the webber conversion.. I doubt many of the pierburg carbs are still working as they should..  :(
