Hey there newbie here
Hey my name is Neil, i am 26 and live in the west midlands, i currently drive a new beetle but the girlfriend bought herself a 1990 1.8 Clipper Convertible yesterday and we are chuffed to bits with it
It does have a few minor problems though which i am hoping someone might be able to help me out with on this forum.
The locks seem to be playing up a bit because the previous owner has been messing with them and he took the central locking motors out and now the doors dont lock/unlock from the outside, are the locks/locking mechanisms easily accessible and easy to get to, to fix them, is there anything in particular i should watch out for when i take the locks apart ?
Also to get the car into first gear, the gear stick has to be lifted slightly or it clashes/crunches with reverse, i was told that it was a rubber at the base of the gear stick that needed replacing, does anyone know if this is true or not ??
If it is just a rubber, does anyone know where to find one, i have looked on GSF but cant find any such thing
Sorry for the questions in my first post, but we are eager to get it sorted ASAP so we can enjoy cruising round whilst the weather is good 8)
Hopefully i will see you all around sometime as we plan to bring it to some shows this year, depending on if we can sort out some of the little niggly bits first.
Thanks in advance
Neil
ps
love the forum, there are some mint looking cars on here 8) 8) 8)

Also,
The car the girlfriend (Jo) has bought is a 1990 karmann clipper 1.8
Does anyone know if it is an 8 valve or 16 valve, carb or injection and what kind of power it might produce or where i might be able to find this information.
Thanks again guys/gals

hi mate, welcome to the forums…
as for your techie questions, if you post them up in the respective tech places up on here your sure to find a quicker answer to the points…
you may need to change all the selector rods and gear linkage bushes, and also adjust the gap for the shift rod underneath the gearbox…
if you check the thread 1st/2nd gear hard to select in the running gear section youll find a link i posted to a legendary site about how to fix it…
your cabby with most probably be a 1.8 8v k-jet… look for a picture of an original mk1 8v engine and a mk2 16v engine and youll see distinct differences that give it away.
good luck and hope you enjoy the car

Hi Neil
Welcome !
If it is a clipper then it will be a 1.8 8v Carb engine which have 90BHP.
I think that the central locking may be a retro fit kit.

Welcome Neil
I've an '89 Clipper Cab had it since April last year someone will av to kill me to get it now 8O (or stump up more than I paid & continue to spend on it!!
I'm by no means a mechanic but most stuff you'll find you can do yourself as long as you've got a decent amount of tools, sweat, money, grazed knuckles, swear words & patience (Haynes manual's handy but this place is the fountain knowledge
). I've seen gear linkage repair kits on the bay @ reasonable price, av a look, plus there's loadsa spares at honest prices on here :y: . Plus you're a damn sight less likely to get butt f?*&$% 8O 8O by a fellow enthusiast. Look before you leap.
Regards
Chris
