Here under false pretences?

Hi all, I'm here to pick you brains regarding Mk 1 Golfs although I'm actually a Scirocco owner (1990 GTII). Lots of similarities under the skin though, so I hope you'll forgive me. I have owned two Mk 1s in the past so perhaps I'm not beyond redemption.

From what I've seen of this site there is a huge body of knowledge out there, looking forward to chatting to some of you.

Cheers, Chris

I'm not actively planning to get another Mk 1 but then again, I wasn't planning to get the Scirocco, so you never know. Here's a few pics of Cleo to be getting on with:

As you can see, she's very tidy but there's enough little jobs to keep me occupied at the weekends.

Cheers, Chris

Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm really pleased with the car so far. Only 81K and 2 owners before me, the last since the car was 18 months old.

Does anyone know if the lower centre console from a Mk 1 with fit a Scirocco? They look very similar. I'm asking because I want to fit a set of guages (oil pressure/temp and voltmeter) and I don't really want to mess around with making up a three hole mounting!

Hi Chris, welcome!  :D

Where are you based? Looks very much like the red Rocco that followed me through Stansted in Essex a few months back??

Love it

I don't think it can have been the one you saw in Stansted, Debs, I've only had it a couple of weeks. Before that it had been garaged for about 18 months, not far from Stansted though as it happens.

Definitely a she, Bert. My old Golf was known as Cleo because my charming son (12 going on thick ear) said he thought it "looked like it had been made by the ancient Egyptians". The Scirocco is the same age as the Golf was, hence Cleopatra II, to give her her full name. The alternative was Anthony - a choice of name which was immediately discarded!

Well, Debs, you never know. Cleo is almost an Essex girl (spent most of her life in St. Albans I understand) but I'm currently based in Wiltshire. Mind you I'm often looking for an excuse to get behind the wheel (spend most of my life on bloody trains) and Essex isn't that far really when the sun's out……

I recently turned down a scirocco that was offered to my dad for free, some guy he knows wanted to clear garage space.  I'm starting to regret it but one Cabby money pit was enough for me (damn my sensible side!)

The phrase "Free Scirocco" made me prick my ears up! I suppose it all depends on what state the Scirocco was in. There are plenty of sound ones around so there's really no need to bother yourself with a basket case. Mind you, even the sound ones have a list of things that need looking at as long as your arm, especially if you're a perfectionist. It's just such a lovely, old fashioned, honest sort of car though…one you almost wear rather than sit in.

Cheers
