Hello from a distance

Hi!
I am the owner of a Campaign that does its work in Australia (Melbourne, Victoria to be more precise). Sorry, that's why I didn't make it to the AGM.
The vehicle is in Helios Blue, largely standard (but with lowered Bilsteins and larger bore exhaust) and has done 165000 miles. Oh, and its sports the rego plate 'UKGOLF'.
I use it daily, mainly suburban driving, and maintain it myself (with the help of my friendly mechanic who allows me to 'pick his brain' when I need to).

There is not a great interest in older Golfs in Australia, so the Forum has been of great value, answering many of my questions and giving information about the Campaign that I was ignorant about.

Are you from the UK originally to own a car like that? if so, did you take it with you?

And finally any pics of your motor out in sunny Aus?  

Oh.. and Yeah, What Al said! I tend to overlook to whole 'welcome' bit because I'm no good at it!

Shame to here there is not much interest over there, im coming out in january for 5 weeks to see what it about, and looking to live there, really dont want to sell it tho, after all the work that has gone into it,

Its nice to hear the MK1 is loved all over the planet.

I hope I haven't overstated the lack of interest in older Golfs in Australia. VW is only a small player on the Australian scene these days (Although Golf 5 si selling v. well in Melbourne).

The Golf 1 was a big hit when it was introduced in 1976 - almost immediate 6 month waiting list on orders. But the response of doubling the price was not a successful marketing move. VW virtually disappearing from the market for a couple of decades.
Air-cooled is all the rage around the car clubs, but there isn't the volume of early water-cooled VWs to generate lots of interest. Golf's are well regarded but air-cooled is where the hysteria and compulsion gets expressed.

I have met up with only one other GTi owner. There is one business, nationally, that specialises in importing GTi parts. Have had little difficulty getting parts from VW and other importers, and used the internet to get the spoilers from the UK.

I'd love to show some pics, but have to work out a web-site first, I gather. There are some magazine shoots, and the dealer shots when it was used at the launch of Golf 5.

Darren, what parts of Australia will you be visiting in January?

perth mate, for 5 weeks but may travel if not keen, looking to live there, but you know the saying, grass is always greener.

Hear lots of good reports about Western Australia and Perth. (And they have two small VW clubs) Expect it to be very hot in January.

Its about three days driving (3000+ miles) from the Eastern capitals. Western Australia is a vast state, with many tourist destinations - just be prepared to travel to them.

Well, I live here. Both UKGOLF and I are imports, but from different parts of the world. My parents brought me here, but UKGOLF was brought here by Brenton who migrated to settle here with his Aussie girl friend in '97. He had first been here on holiday and after surveying the scene thought it better to bring his car with him when he came permanently. He was, by reports, incredulous that he could register the car with the plates UKGOLF.

But that is in Victoria. As I wrote earlier, WA is mega-miles away.

If you do pop over to Melbourne, let me know, so we can meet up. What is the Golf you are driving?
