good day all!!
Hi
What a brilliant site! I'm really impressed by the atmosphere that the lil mk1 seems to be exhuberating here!
I'm on my second mk1 cab as I'm a uni student and bought my first one a couple of years ago as a cheap bit of fun to run down to the beach etc in and from there I fell in love with the things! Since then, I've been casually renovating a black 1990 mk1 cab GTI for the last year and I have a couple of queries if anyone might know the answer to…
I'm really keen to keep it as though it could have rolled out of the factory. I've got a set of mk1 P-slot wheels (with all the centre caps) on the car and an original tan leather interior that I took off a C reg gti cab donor car which I bought as the only changes made to date. The basic question is… can any body tell me if these were genuine options that were available from VW on a mk1 cab of this age or have I gone and got the wrong end of the stick?!
Will get some photo's on here soon too.
P.S. has anybody got an old set of estoril alloys that need refurbing as that would be a touch on my current project but I can't afford to pay top dollar for 'em until I finish uni?
Cheers, Steve.

I'll look forward to it.
In the meantime, I've uploaded some photos as below. It looks a bit of a shed at the mo but this has yet to be addressed as I have been attacking the mechanical side of things only so far. Next week, I begin cosmetics…
. I have opted for some old school audi quattro style alloys which I think gives it a better look than the p slots did? Open to opinions please?
Oh yeah, I think I would like some 'Le Castellet's' alternatively to Estorils' so if anyone has any (prefably a rather ropey set for cheap remembering that I'm a student at the moment and money is tight!) then give me a shout too.
Roll on the summer though and get those mk1 cabs looking the stuff!
Steve.

Doesn't look a shed to me - looks tidy. Not 100% on the wheels though, think you need bigger diameter!
Keep us posted how you go with it

fingers crossed those estorils will come through for me soon then eh! don't want to go too big though at the cost of looking like a cheesy boy racer!
I put some 17 inch 8 spoke tooras on it once and i was nearly sick on the floor so i pulled them off asap!
Hopefully that time has now passed for these cars and the original/genuine look is favoured nowadays??

I don't think p-slots would have every came on a cabby, let alone a '90 registered one.
I like the audi wheels, just need to either cover the centres or the hub nuts at least with a cap off a VW.
Don't go bigger than 15" the ride will be poor and they look silly IMO
BTW nice car and interior looks great.

keeping the look genuine
Good shout.
Thanks. The interior is a genuinity concern as I hope that it was maintained as an option until 1990 as it was from an '85 cab originally. I'm trying to connolise it at the moment but I'm having to improvise with some stuff I'm shipping in from the states as you can't buy hardcore leather refurbishing stuff here in the uk. It is apparently too 'dangerous' and you need to be a recognised proffessional to get it (or a Connoly!). The Connoly's were legends at upholstery I'm sure but I think not allowing private individuals to by the dye etc is just a case of keeping the Connoly's succeeding proffessionals from losing their trade to DIY merchants like me! Oh well, not paying ?1k for an upholstery job on a car that's only worth about double that so DIY it is!
I will defo keep the p slots off it then. Any ideas if a 90 mk1 cab would've come with any sort of 15 inch wheels? I'm not sure that they ever even put estorils on these?? What size are the Le Castellets?
Steve.

Le Castellets are 15" but they only came on the rivage models, I think yours may have came with steel wheels and trims :? ? but whould have to check to be sure.
Keep the audi wheels I think they look fine but you need to cover the hub nuts at least to keep the grit out of them. Just an idea - will the p-slot caps fit on the audi wheels??

Well, I had the original scala alloys on it when I acquired the vehicle over a year ago. I got rid of them as they were horrible and I have a thing against them from the off! Need something that covers up the ugly rear drums as I vow to never paint a wheel drum as it has to be the lowest of the low!!
Just tried the p slot caps. Can't believe I didn't think of that one. Sadly though, they are about 3/4 mm in diameter too large. That could have been pretty cool though. I'm now thinking of modding the p slot caps to fit them on. But don't worry, I'm gonna model it on 3D studio max or solidworks before I go and hap-hazardly butcher a set of original pirelli p slot caps which seem like gold dust these days! Alternatively, the caps for the audi replica wheels look quite easy to make up. Looks like I could bodge together any old circular metal disc and stick any centre cap that fits the bore hole onto the back of it.. This DIY malarky is easy (until you actually do it I guess)!!
I like the idea of steels without the trims though. Are they like the mk2 gti steels that came on some GTIs? They look quite deep dish if they are. Nice… Where would you check? I can't find anything on the original spec options for the cabs?
Steve.

I think you'd have to find an original brochure or something :dontknow: shame the caps didn't fit, if you do mod some then try and find some mk2 ones ( without pirrelli stamped in them ) they are much less rare or as you said you could make some thing up
