Always wanted one, now got one
Ever since my first trip to Florida in 1983, where I was waved at by four blondes in a white Cabriolet (two sitting on the parcel shelf) I've had a soft spot for a Mk 1 Golf Cabriolet

I had know about one that was sitting in a garage for the last 8 years, so last week I decided to ask if it was for sale. Indeed it was, although needed some work. I wanted a project car anyway, so I agreed on a price and took it away.
It's now sitting downstairs and I'm chuffed to bits. Can't wait to get it on the road.
Here's the first pictures I've taken…

Ok, I only showed you the good side, lol.
The N/S rear corner is pretty badly rotted. I need to either replace the entire wing section (expensive), or weld it all up (less expensive, but lots of work).
Boot lid needs de-rusted.
It needs a spring, (or so I was told) not checked which one yet.
Needs fuel pipe replaced. I bodged it up the day I got it coz I just HAD to see if it would run, which it did. Not bad after 8 years of sitting in a corner gathering dust, and other garage related materials.
Roof is near perfect. Interior just needs cleaned.
I'll get to work at the weekend.

…has it been damaged in the past or something…
Looks like it - this is typical of what happens down the line, when a relatively new car is repaired with cheap, pattern parts which don't have the same level of corrosion protection as the original panels, and the work is not done to a professional standard (eg: painting topcoat paint straight over the black primer, without flatting it and applying decent weld-through primer, not waxing the cavities - like the sills in this case, etc, etc). Lucky that it wasn't the inner wings and chassis legs that were repaired previously by these bodgers 8O
The good news is that the problems resulting from this kind of workmanship are usually very localised, so are easy enough to repair - just a shame that it all has to be done again, because it was done "on the cheap" the first time…
