83 BRM GTI

Hello everyone,

Just want to say what a brilliant forum this is, you are all very helpful.

I have been after a MK1 GTI for a while then i found one.

I am a proud new owner of a 1983 GTI Campaign Sun roof model. This car came with a massive folder full of receipts almost very service carried out, never had any re-spraying and looks totally original.

The Engine was modified by BR Motorsport in 1999 which gave it 152hp, then the owner went back there after the engine bed in to get the K-Star fitted. Car is now around 160bhp. Got reciepts totaling around 8K for the whole restoration.

As with all old cars there were some minor issues which needed fixing   but i would not have had any other way. Just had its MOT and passed with flying colours.

So I started on the issues:
-   The MFA was only showing oil temp, time, outside temp.
-   Speedo needle was a bit sticky
-   No Speedo or rev counter bulbs lighting
-   Cigarette lighter not working
-   Instrument dash lights very dim
-   Interior light not working
-   Radio bad sound quality and a bit loose in the dash.

So after carefully taking off the PCB and changing the bulbs and connections over onto my existing clocks, replaced the needle for the Speedo as it seemed to be glued together. Plugged it all in and every thing works 100% can't believe it fully working MFA, bulbs every thing. Next was to pop down to me local VW dealers to get a full set of dash bulbs, so £35 later installed all new bulbs, but the dash light s still seems really dim.

So checked all the earth's on the car and the one on the rocker cover was really in a bad way, so cut the connector off and put a new connector on and insulated the cable. Interior light started working, great.
Next I decided to check all earths on the car and found that the three in the boot were also bad, so done the same, now all dash lights and stereo equipment is working and look how it should really happy.

Anyway that's enough of me banging on some pictures of the car; I will post some new ones up when I get a chance with a decent camera.

Well i have bought some weitec shocks and springs 40mm lowering kit, and i want to get some new summer wheels, not sure what ones though. I have had a look through the Fav MK1 pics and quite like the ATS Classics maybe.

I would like to get the car dyno'd and maybe an engine tune up.

Then later on maybe a full leather retrim? The roof could do with a respray as some of the laquer in areas is coming off. The list goes on

I now have the bug, its funny when i bought this car i said to my self keep it as it is and fix the issues which need fixing then thats it, but after looking on this site and seeing how some of your cars look gave me ideas. :D

different wheels would be ok but keep the p slots so you can go back if you want

what the part number on the p slots??

i'd keep it nice and standard with just little mods

but it's not my car :)

Agreed will deffinaltly keep the P slots, maybe get them restored to there former glory.

Not sure what the part number is i will pop out after work and have a look on the wheels for you.

I have not got my car at work at the moment as i think i might have a split coolant hose or maybe head gasket gone, did not want to drive it and damage the car.

Nice looking campaign I say mod it to hell then I stand more of a chance of winning with mine at shows  but seriously i wouldn't be tempted to mess with it to much the looks off the public you get with a standard car are always appreciative.

welcome to the site

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?
