I used 10W40 in my Diesel Rabbit for 20 years.
Just stay away from Storebranded or Fram/Bosch filters.
Stay with WIX, Mann,Mahl, genuine VW.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Stuff VW would put in your car…
AVS Car Parts
Stuff I use but I don't pay that much for it… when on offer or use discount code it's about £12.

Stay away from Castrol oil as it's not as good as it used to be….

What's the issue with Bosch filters? I always thought they were good quality.

Specifically they don't have the anti-drain back valve on the filters. While that is usually for side mounted filters and not specifically for the way dubs hang, the other itty bit that the valve dies is to assist in stabilizing the oil pressure at idle.
I have had in the past using Fram or Bosch a intermittent flashy light at idle even tho I had over 1 bar on the gauge.
Switched to Wix, the problem went away magically.
Ironically most of the cars that I see in the wrecking yard have Fram or Jean Erics filters on them co-inky-dink?
Matter of fact the Cabriolet that I got a Pristine Dash Bezel off of yesterday, had a Fram Filter.

Surely we shouldn't avoid Bosch fuel and air filters or any of their other products?

No, I still use Fram Air filters and or Bosch, or even Store Branded, as they don't seem to be an issue, Oil filters are another matter.
