Rear Seatbelts

Hello, 

My little mk1 goes on the road in a week all being well. One thing I would like to get sorted is the rear seatbelts,. 

Do mk1 golf tin tops have three point belts in the rear or just lap belts? 

I ask as I currently have no belts at all and don't know what I should have. 

I would like 3 point belts but these would need retro fitting? I can see Crazy Quiffs sell a kit for a cabby but not sue of its fit in a tin top. 

Any advise would be gold dust.

Hi Paul, I retro fitted 3 point rear belts in my 1983 GTI tintop last year. It never came with them from the factory as I believe it was an optional extra when mine was new but the mounts were there. I bought mine from a member on the forum and most of the bolts were included but I did also get some bolts from the scrapyard because a couple were missing. I'm not 100% sure when MK1's first came equipped with rear mounts but probably most if not all had the mounts. You have to remove the blanks on the C pillars and I think I had to remove blanks from the parcel shelf supports. The centre belt is a lap belt. The outer belts have the reel mounted under the parcel shelf support, the belt goes through the parcel shelf support and the pivoting mount bolts to the c pillar using a bolt with a built in spacer to allow the seat belt to move and then the other end of the belt bolts into the floor under the rear seat, you should have four holes under the seat one for each outer belt and two closer to the centre of the car where the lap belt and the belt clips mount. These bolt holes may have blanks in them, mine didn't. I hope this helps, if you want pictures then let me know and I'll take some and send them across ( I am away this weekend so I may not be able to send them until after the weekend). Also, check what your drivers side mount under the parcel shelf support is like, it's a common rot spot on these cars and mine was rusted badly. I repaired it but it's a fairly big job, mainly because the fuel filler etc is the other side of the mount and it really all needs removing including the tank unless you like risking setting fire to your car.

Now that is a response…. wow, more information then I expected! Thank you very much. 

I will have a good look for the blanking plugs when I am at the garage tomorrow and hopefully pick up some seat belts on here. 

I will also check rust, thank you for the heads up, not really what you want to find!

What year is your car?
 Depends on the year of your car to what fixing will be there at manufacture.

If you click on the link in my signature it shows most of the work I have done on my car and shows a before and after shot of my drivers side mount. The mount rusts from inside the arch above the filler neck and is normally shot by the time you see it inside the car. Let me know what you find, I did all this early last year and it's still fairly fresh in my mind. I also have more pics of the repair on my phone so can send them to you if needed.

Thanks Mark1, She is a 1980 gti. The seats were not even bolted down when I brought her but that's not age related! 

Thanks Saulty, I will have a look at your posts. Thank you for putting them on here. I think I know the spot you are referring to, it's had some repair work done there before. 

As it's a 1980 car you should have the holes and fixings in the car, my 1978 Mk1 Scirocco had the holes covered over with a black plastic cap which is screwed into the captive nut.
If you remove the base of the back seat you should see the holes in the corner and 1 or 2 holes in the middle for the buckles, you will have to feel about in the C pillar to find the hole if you still have the headlining in place.
You may need to change/modify the rear parcel shelf side holders to get the seat belt through if there is no slot in there already? Fixing for the real should be just below the shelf.

You can buy new seat belts which will fit for not much money so don't go paying silly prices for some old vw ones. I fitted new belts as I felt safer doing that.

I bought some for my Mk1 Scirocco so sorry can't help with which model fits a Mk1 Golf.

Seat Belts, who needs them, most of the cars I grew up with didn't have them, Sure you had them in Airplanes in the 50's but no so Cars until the mid 60's…

I will say that I did add them to my 58 bug-eye, and 67 midget… and I can remember over here that my dad added them to just about every car he ever owned up to 69….. He would buy them the same color as the seats.

The good old days when people used to chill out on the bonnet after a crash!

As a funny…..

I can remember my dad buying one of these for a Cross Country trip for my little brother…. now who in the world would place that in a car and expect safety…  Child Abuse…. Child Abuse….. I can remember the Steering wheel had a Beep-Beep squeaker horn,,,, after about 5 minutes, my father driving down the road at 65, reached over and ripped that little Squeaker out.

It's easy to judge yesterday in today's eyes but back then that car seat was probably the front edge of car safety! 

Hello Matt, sorry for the delayed response! 

Thank you so much for the photos, they are a real help but unfoutunately my car has had an arch repair and there is no bracket for the reel and no holes in the c pillar at all! Looks like it will be some serious work to get the belts in! I don't have a roof lining like yours that is coming down the pillar. 

But the car is out the garage and I am driving it and loving every minute. She is running rough and needs some tlc… but on top of that the bonnet popped up on me and bent itself over the roof so its as usual one step forward two steps back. 

Will add photos of it if I can work out how to do it. 

If you can find a Cabrio or Cabriolet in the Breakers, shoot a Golf newer should work, you could remove the brackets and install them on you rGolf.  It would take a fair amount of  welding, but could be done.  

I have seen threads where they took the brackets and bits off of a 91.5ish Cabriolet and weld them to a earlier Cabby and a Golf (rabbit) over here.
