My fuel gauge has been playing up for some time and has finally given up the ghost.
I checked the sender to make sure it wasn't the gauge, but can't find an equivalent sender on the net.
All the ones available have vertical connectors, whereas the original has a horizontal connetion.
Does anyone know where I can source an original equivalent.
Thanks

What year and car do you have, cabriolet or tin top and carb or fuel injection?
1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Its a 1982 GTI tintop. I am assuming that the duff fuel sender is original to the car

Did you take the cover off the circuit board, it could be just cold solder joints or a wiper arm that needs to be cleaned up a tad.

I took the cover off and found that the wiper was worn out at the tip and was digging into the winding, and the winding was split. I don't think that I'd be able to solder the winding as it would need to dead flat for the wiper arm, and avoid short circuiting part of it.
Have you managed to do this?
I'm now thinking that maybe I could rewind it, and nick the wiper arm off a new one, but then I don't know the wire gauge. And the number of turns would need to be identical.
What I don't get is that my sender seems to be unique, but that can't be the case.
Does anyone have a photo of their sender installed showing the connection on top?

Assuming (not always a good idea) the tanks are the same so this should fit?

That's curious - I have my sender unit out at the moment and it looks identical to that one, except my car is a clipper (carb) engine 1.8.

Think later carb engined cars standardised on the GTI tank setup

Yeah that makes sense….
When you see the likes of Vw heritage saying….
…. - " Mk1 Golf Cabrio 79-84 to chassis >>55-E-011 290 Mk1 Golf 79-83 Mk1 Jetta 79-83 Mk1 Scirocco 79-83 Mk2 Scirocco 84-85 to chassis >>53-E-022 074"…..
It makes me think they know what the correct fitment is…LoL

It seems that the heritage part is the only one available. So I bought on and fitted it.
The issue is (was) that the connection on the top is vertical rather than horizontal. To overcome this I used a couple of short flexes with female spades onto the sender and a pair of filed down spades into the existing plug, which I then covered with heatshrink tube to hold it in place.
The cover just fits, and it works.
I'm still wondering why the horizontal connection sender isn't available.
Thanks for the comments everyone.

IIRC the Polo, Skoda has a Vertical plug while the golf and or rabbit has a horizontal one. and as they quite making them in 84, the Golf, and 93 for the Cabriolet, I suspect that possibly in South Africa, they changed the design to incorporate the newer style.
