Bonnet to wing earth strap.

Post

Hi all. So I was getting the car back to a presentable state after the drenching going to the AGM.
Noticed the bonnet to wing earth strap had snapped near the eyelet on the bonnet.
Does anyone know what this does as it seemed to of sorted out my wobbly speedo needle?

Thanks

Sorry,i forgot to add that I got the strap off and opened up the pressed eyelet and attach the wire securely to it then fitted it back in place.

I guess it's there for safety, to ensure all parts of the metal body are at the same electrical potential, minimising the risk of sparks, particularly in an accident situation

No, it is called a Bonding wire, original use was to eliminate the HV lead bleed over to the Antenna on low end car Radios. We used to call it over driving the final amp, and allowing the reving engine motorboating through the speakers…

After the advent of resistor wires and plugs the need for these were negated.

Useful to know. However, I wonder whether this wasn't the sole reason, as VW didn't start to phase out bonnet earth straps on new models until the late 1990s, starting with with the Passat B5 launched in 1996
