Which Gearbox

Hi
I am after a bit of assistance as to which gearbox would be suitable for my engine conversion;

The engine I am putting in is a 16V KR with

2.0l TSR short engine fitted with a and AMD stage 2 ported an polished head with a custom ground inlet cam and standard exhaust cam and jenvey throttle bodies and an emerald ECU. My concrn is that even with a relatively mild map it will be up around 160bhp and with  2.0 ltre block and  the inlet cam is designed to improved low rev range torque it may be a bit much for the 020 gearbox.
Any suggestions? I did think about a TDI gearbox but thought that would probabaly be a bit to long on the gear ratio.
Anybody ??
Cheers
Lee

well i have a std 2y box on my abf with 166bhp and 149 torques, touch wood its fine. main thing is how you drive it! no slamming thru gears and try not to wheelspin off the line all the time, that does them in.

if you do for for an 02a box the abf gearbox is a good match for that i think, or g60. tdi may be a bit tall for an n/a valver, they're more in favour with the boooost boys

Which gearbox?

I ran a 020 gearbox with a Quaife ATB LSD from 1992 -1996 on my Mk1. This car ran various BHP and torques (183BHP in 1992 and then 330BHP+ in 1996).
I appreciate the latter gearboxes (02a etc) have a larger diameter clutch but given your power and torque the 020 should cope without any problem.

aye the problem with the 020 box isnt the clutch setup, thats no issue. its the fact the boxes are made of cheese! main problem is the diff rivets that can be replaced with bolts/lsd. but the actual gears on the shafts can get stripped if you put too much power/shock loads thu them

Hi Fella's,

Been of the grid for a while due to illness, all fixed now and about to start on my wifes toy again. Decided to go a different route with the engine so I have a 165bhp KR engine with an AMD Technic head complete with custom ground inlet cam (K-plus upgrade it was called). The dyno print out I have that goes with it shows 165 bhp with a 15% increase in torque which comes in at about 1500 rpm lowere than the original cam, stainless supersprint manifold and down pipe, loom clocks ecu and all the bit for the conversion and the drive shaft hubs, MK 2 16v fron tand rear callipers etc.

If anyone is looking for BBR rs and struggling to find the correct offset in a four stud as I was I have just had some re-worked from 5 to 4 by TTL tooling down in Essex and you struggle to see where the old 5 studs were originally outstanding worksmanship. Cost £300 for the 4 but well worth it. I will post some photoes when I get back to the UK at the end of the month.

Been catching up on some of the build threads like Mike_Turbo ( that is an impressive piece of engineering) and will be posting my progress as and when I make any.
