Which engine is best? - Quick QU

Hi all.

1st of all I apologise if this post is in the wrong section, I did try to post in the most appropriate one.

I just wondered, in your opinion which engine would be a better buy:

1. 1800 Cc 16v from a MK2 golf 16v, with a rebuilt block, reground crank, shells and new piston rings or

2. 1.8 16v Corrado engine

- is there any difference?

Thanks
Ric

Essentially, they're the same engine. I don't know the details but I think all the ancillaries are similar/same, so the bits you'd need would be on either car.

I thought it was a 50mm on later Mk2s and all Corrado 1.8 16V, while the 2.0 16V had a 42mm inlet manifold. In any case, there's only a tiny bhp difference at the top end, and the smaller inlet manifold gives better torque at lower revs.

whatever….theres a difference, and i got the measurements right, not 100% which version came in which car or years, chasis numbers, reg numbers or paint colours but at least it gave the correct info

i think he wants to know which is the better engine to purchase from the two available. are the engines still in their cars? if so, inspect then running and drive them. what's the mileage? service histories? it's impossible to suggest which of the two is a better buy from the lack of information and even then it's an educated guess. obviously a properly rebuild engine is favourable, but it may have been thrashed for 40,000 miles of it's rebuilt life and never properly run in or serviced. the other may have done 120,000 miles and looked after and driven well all it's life. this could give another 100,000 miles if the same care is continued.

Also of course it depends on the price, and the level of experience you have. I bought my 16V and did a top end rebuild myself, its well worth it.

Thanks for the info guys.

Yes I am looking at buying one or the other but knew you would not be able to advise me without specifics so I just decided to enquire as to which was a better engine on general terms.
