What engine for my conversion
Hi all I am in need of some help. In in the process of starting my new project. I have an 83 1.3 tin top golf. The previous owner started down the route of a bike carb project but I dont think that the engine is going to give me the power I am looking for. Im not planing to go silly but I really have no idea. Idealy I would like an original mk1 gti engine but fining it hard to track 1 down. So Im looking into other options. Ive looked at mk2 gti and mk3 gti 16v. Im even toying with the the idea of a mk4 gti 1.8t engine. Im clued up to the point that im an engineer and not afraid to tackle the job but something with a guide that could help me would be great. Please could you give me some advice as to what to look for and what your recomendations are.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers

My New Year's resolutions are: 1. Stop making lists. B. Be more consistent. 7. Learn to count.

Hi Ross and welcome to the madhouse.
Try this link…… The Mk1 Golf Owners Club
It may help you decide. I think a lot of it comes down to ££ and what you want from the car power wise.
Hope this helps

The mk1 1.8 gti box would be easiest, the mk2 16v not too hard, the 02a which is the box the abf comes with but more work to fit. How ever my choice would be the mk3 8v gti box, it has a decent ratio 5th, 22/23 mph per 1000 revs, is rod change so easy fitment and there happens to be one for sale over on club gti, nothing to do with me.
