weird question

bmw 520i engine in a mk1 golf? can it be done, the engine is perfect working condition and hes giving it to me (along with the car) for free. . . is it worth attempting to fit it to my car, would it work, what would i need to modify, is it not worth the hastle, it would be something unique... thanks for any replys guys

Is the engine not about half the size of the car. also aren't beamers rear wheel drive? I suppose anythings possible they did that TVR MK2  didn't they, just depends how much you've got tp spend. You may be better off selling the Beamer and buying a VAG engine to go in it. Or then again selling your mk1 and doing up the beamer (sorry will I go to hell for that last remark)

Me, I'd tidy up the BM, flog it and buy a nice 1.8T, much easier to fit, fettle and fix.

the bimmers a bit dodgey so cant sell or keep it, i can break it but thats about it, i guess il just ebay all the bits and bobs, any one know of any forums that would be interested in buying any parts, shame becuase its a beautiful car oh and im actually looking for a g60, just thought this might be a bit...different

straight six will never fit in the engine bay.

If you were going to choose a straight 6 to fit into a car, I'd chose something far more potent than a 2 litre! For example, Merc 3.2 litre? Straight 6 configuration gives the most smoothness in an engine (short of a V12) because the cylinders completely cancel out 1st and 2nd order harmonic imbalances. However its a very long engine, longer than a V8.

British Leyland (Rover) did experimental work, putting a straight 6 into a Metro, the key thing was the transmission though. It was a special development in a completely new way of doing things, which was a gearless transmission so it took up very little space. The engine was about 7/8 the width of the engine bay.

thats interesting paul, but the word 'experimental' hits me, i need a engine to be guarenteed to go into my car without problems becuase its a daily runner, but if i can get hold of a nother mk1 with a good body and blown engine, maybe i could try, but the gearbox would be a problem as its HUGE!

I guarantee the BMW 6 cylinder engine won't physically fit into a Mk1 engine bay, at least not with a transmission and all the other stuff at the same time. It could fit in the back LOL.

Volkswagen developed the VR6 to be shorter than an inline 6, not have the exhaust outlet problem of the V6 and thus ideal for transverse FWD. So, it would make sense to put that in, if you want a 6 cylinder engine. Others have done it so its possible. You could even put a 3.2 (eg R32 or something) in.
